Re: LED Downlights - how much V & W 2Feb 16, 2012 5:01 am I have seen 230v 9w, they are a little dimmer than 50w halogen, depending on brand 11w is usually the equivalent, but I have never used or seen a 12v light, you could try going to a beacon lighting or similar lighting shop and ask if they have some setup on display Re: LED Downlights - how much V & W 3Feb 16, 2012 8:22 am We have 240V 8W warm white dimmable LED's and they appear as bright as 50W halogen. The 240V LED's are all self-contained with transformer. Look for the ones with GU10 fitting as this fits most downlight kits. Hi Mary, 9 Watts in Warm White isnt bright enough to have reasonable spacing. I have 6*3 Watts and they are good enough for a 2m spacing at 2.7m ceiling height. That is in Natural White colour. In my opinion Warm white is too yellow (dull), and cool white is too stark (makes thing appear blue or green). NW is a happy medium between. Where are you located. I am in Lithgow NSW. Regards, Shane Re: LED Downlights - how much V & W 6Mar 14, 2012 12:19 pm Hi Mary, watts and volts are not actually an indication of brightness, what you need to look out for is lumen output. Watts only refers to how much electricity a light requires to reach its brightness. Halogen globes have a lumen output of about 700 while using 50W to do so. In an LED you should look for something that has at least 700 lumens and uses around 10 watts. A lot of the 8-10W LEDs only give out about 300 lumens of light which is nowhere near good enough. Always make sure you look out for the lumen output when finding out brightness. Another good measurement to look for is CRI, which is the quality of the light. Re: LED Downlights - how much V & W 7Mar 14, 2012 11:15 pm I get my LEDs from ledcentral.com.au. I find that 9W are good for mood or niche lighting only. I use a 9W in my desk lamp which provides enough light to see what I am doing but not really bright enough for working or even reading for extended periods. Their 15Ws on the other hand are great! I have a couple side by side with 50W halogens and the LEDs are brighter! I use the warm white version which is somewhere in between halogen yellow and fluoro white - I quite like it. One thing to keep in mind though is that these are a self contained unit (not a globe) which means that when they go they will have to be replaced by an electrician. Hopefully that will be some years from now and there will be better and much cheaper solutions. Re: LED Downlights - how much V & W 8May 31, 2012 11:20 am Lumen output is important. An LED downlight should have an equivalent lumen level as a halogen it's replacing. However, Lux should also be taken into consideration. Lux is lumens/per square meter ie. The light to actually falls on a surface. An LED has very directional focused light, so while it might have a lower Lumen output compared to a halogen, the Lux level might be superior. 7 12130 I thought this would be a popular question but I haven't been able to find any similar posts.
