Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Our M3tric0n story 183Sep 10, 2008 11:25 pm I'm back!
After initially thinking that our internet access would not be disrupted, apart from the usual disconnect/reconnect, we went without for 6 days, but everything is back to normal now. Thank you all so much for your best wishes etc. It's been a huge week or so, but every day we achieve just a little bit more to try and get this place a bit more orderly, for example today was the first day that we've actually been able to fit two cars into the garage. We still have no landscaping apart from the couple of ferns I planted before handover, but tomorrow a truckload of crushed rock is being delivered which will act as foundation for pavers, which got delivered today. There has been some issues after handover, normal stuff like sticky door handles and two doors that didn't quite close, but the biggie was last Sunday when the connection to the tap in the bathroom gave way and flooded the vanity unit. It was due to the o-ring on the connection point on the bottom of the tap being incorrectly installed in the factory. We also have some minor issues with leaking shower bases, and one of the central heating ducts in the rumpus room doesn't blow hot air. All these problems are getting paid attention in due course, so it's not like M3tricon have taken the money and run. D@n, our house slab sits up quite high, so levelling the ground between the house and the boundary fence would either result in the ground permanently remaining below slab (and driveway) level, or the ground level being 200mm up the fence. The finished ground level will eventually be the same as the driveway, and if the gaps under the gates become a problem, I will fit rubber skirts to them. Helyn, I can't wait to see the photo. Perhaps someone can photoshop it to also show your foot in your mouth? ![]() ![]() Here's a few photos taken since we moved in. Portico lights (and there's that bloody blue car again): Dining furniture and new fridge. Couldn't have our old white fridge in a stainless kitchen could we? New corner suite for the rumpus room. We took a carpet sample to the furniture store to enable us to better pick the colours. New telly, old stand, old stereo gear. Finally, the desk in the study area with a computer looking at a certain addictive website..... Geoff - Decophile. Don't you read coffee break?? The only outstanding issue with the house now is that the painter still has to return for a couple of touch-ups. I have been busy mainly outside, but I've also managed to install one of the Tastics, put up various hooks etc, and there is still surround sound wiring to do. We organised a landscaper to lay down and compact some crushed rock for pavers, we quickly laid some roughly in place so at least we can now get away with hanging out the clothes in moccies. ![]() ![]() Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The yard area in the pic above has now been covered in topsoil and sown, today we noticed grass appearing. There's still a lot more to do though. Before & after pics of the path from the deck to the gate. I am simply spreading leftover brickies sand on the crushed rock, lining up and stamping on the pavers, and wetting the sand. I know it would be better to use a bit of mortar, but the pavers seem to be stabilising quite well. The gaps between will be filled with white pebbles in due course; the wide area next to the deck will feature a grass tree. By the way the extension lead you see here goes to next door, who have just started building. They were using our power for a few days until their electricity box was connected, with our permission. Their building supervisor said we would be compensated, we didn't really care anyway because it makes for good relationships, and realistically they probably only used $10 worth anyway. We were blown away to receive a $50 Bunnings voucher from him. ![]() Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Freshly oiled deck. An afterthought was putting the dog in the boarding kennels for a couple of nights. ![]() Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Still relevent to our story is what happens tomorrow. It is the day we are handing the keys in to our old place. Our lease ran out on Saturday, final inspection is in the morning, apart from the wear and tear to the paintwork and dirty carpet (which we were advised to not clean because it was already that way when the place was sold) the place has come up pretty good after cleaning it out so we should get our bond back. Disappointingly, last week, someone gained entry to the yard and actually stole the light globes out of the outdoor lights! Geoff - Decophile. Re: Our M3tric0n story 197Sep 24, 2008 12:49 am Eager, congrats on the handover and eventual move! ![]() Your house is beautiful and your colour selections have been spot on. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=10262 Geoff - Decophile. Re: Our M3tric0n story 200Nov 12, 2008 9:21 pm Although technically not a construction issue, I'm just posting a small update here so that everyone can see or hear about the journey from turning a house into a home.
We've now been in for 10 weeks. Living here really does feel like home now; the gardens and yards are taking shape (updates shortly in my other thread, see the above post for the link), and slowly but surely things are taking shape inside too. We've had some issues though; the shower base continues to intermittently leak in the bathroom, and as time goes on we're experiencing squeaky and loose doors/plaster cracks in the corner joins of the cornices etc, all these issues are minor and will be fixed at the 3-month maintenance call. The garage door has also had its issues, it was making a horrible grinding sound at the top of its stroke due to misalignment of one of the tracks. That was repaired today. One of the biggest unknowns going forward was how hot the house would get. Unlike our old place, we have no external awnings here. The east facing kid's bedrooms certainly get warm in the mornings now, but the lazy buggers should be up by the time it gets hot anyway. ![]() Most of my spare time has been devoted to outside. I now have power in my shed and I finally got around to installing a pump for my rainwater tank, which collects water off the shed, for gardening purposes. The job inside the house that I had great satisfaction completing was hooking up my surround speakers in the rumpus, which I pre-wired during construction: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The wall plates for the rear speakers are hidden behind the speakers, making a very neat installation. Now all I have to do is either buy a new TV stand, or build or buy new main speaker stands (these ones are a bit temporary!). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ DS was kind enough to buy himself a PS3 and a HDMI cable, as a consequence we now have a Blu-ray player! ![]() Out of interest when did you sign contract?
