Browse Forums Building A New House Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 21Feb 14, 2012 9:56 pm I like the idea of putting the beading around the feature tiles, i havnt done that, i can only hope it looks good. I work away from home so I didn't have that much time to plan I have 2 gold laced Wyandotte, lots of naked necks ( my favorites ) 1 dorking hen and 1 dorking rooster 1 bantam favarole rooster, guinea fowl and ducks, I don't collect the eggs because they are all there to hunt bugs at the moment and they are a bit young. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 22Apr 07, 2012 8:11 pm Hi everyone,
my head is in a spin again as I have discovered Fx180 benchtop is now available in Oz and since Cook no. 2 likes it, he has agreed to white cupboards...! the darling.. So we are going for either the slate sequoia or the silver travertine. I will also have black wrought iron cup handles on doors and drawers. Splashback is white 100 x 300 gloss tile, laid brick pattern, with an inset tile. I am thinking of parchment for cupboards? Or should I go whiter? I can't afford the gloss or silk finish. And what about bronzeworks on the kicks....? I imagine it might give the cupboards a "floating" look, but white kicks are too much cleaning. I would really like the planked look cupboard profile too, does anyone know what is involved to add the trims or molding to cupboards? Google search hasn't been much help. Thanks in advance for all your ideas. I'm really excited about my new choices!! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 23Apr 08, 2012 11:50 am I would be interested in moldings for the doors as well, my builder doesn't do wood doors and I didn't want vinyl wrap so I just went with laminex, I thought one day I would change the doors if it looked wrong ( to plain ) but moldings would be perfect Can you post some photo of samples so we can get an idea of your colors? So far they sound great Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 24Apr 08, 2012 2:54 pm Hi excited, pics won't post, but here's a link to some pics. http://zh-hk.facebook.com/media/set/com ... 9878745978 Also http://selector.com/au/suppliers/the-la ... x-surfaces My personal favourite from the photos is the golden mascarello but that's not available here yet...You can see that on US sites. Looking forward to finding out about adding molding- the only search results I found was just adding moulding to top of cupboards to blend into cornices etc. Perhaps we need to redirect this question to the renovation link? Any ideas on cabinet colours with the silver travertine or the slate sequoia? Any ideas on cabinet colours with the silver travertine or the slate sequoia? OMG no wonder you were so excited, I love the colors you picked especially the slate sequoia, I would put Antique White with it because it is perfect and you don't want to take away from it, if you put a green vase on it the green color would come out or put copper or bronze and those colors would come out But I'm not an expert, it will be good to see what others come up with. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 26Apr 09, 2012 6:13 pm Yes, the slate sequoia is described as deep browns with veins of dark green so as you say either colour would be highlighted. Copper or bronze would look great! I also think touches of greens or charcoals on the silver travertine would look fantastic too. . . I tried antique white, seems to throw rather "yellow". Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 27Apr 13, 2012 1:30 am I went to Laminex this week and got a "sample" of the slate sequoia- actually a big glossy photocopy page. It is only available in the Diamond Gloss, some of the others come in the natural finish.
Cupboards: either Parchment or Moleskin. Moleskin tones in perfectly, the parchment "freshens" it up. Kicks: Peat. A very dark green, looks good against either cupboard colour. Sadly Bronzeworks was much too dark. The silver travertine is lovely too, and extremely realistic, but doesn't suit the warm tone of our floor tiles. I am waiting on costings. . . The other thing I am worried about is that I hope it won't look too sophisticated for the rest of my house! Maybe some slightly rustic cupboard handles would help. . . ? Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 28Apr 13, 2012 11:05 am I like the sound of the peat for the kick board, it is so hard choosing isn't it, luck you realized the bronze was to dark, Rustic handles sound like a good idea and the little things you add later will all add to the look. I really worry that mine won't look good because it is part country look and part modern, such as my handles, glass overhead cupboards, chicken tiles, diamond tiles over the oven/rangehood area, mantle shelf, but with the laminex cupboards, hopefully because I have so many draws rather than cupboards it will be ok.....then I remember that mine will be what they call Modern Country Kitchen so that means it can be whatever I put together Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 29Apr 13, 2012 12:07 pm I love mantle shelves! Do you have any pics? My house will be hopefully the same, "modern/country". I think the blend is called "transitional" in USA- funny how everything has a label... What handles are you having on your cupboards? I was thinking of the cup handles but not really sure, I might just go for some really small wrought iron knobs. In my modern/country I have a few family antiques, a maple sideboard that my Dad made which is 60's style, and my living room couches- well, I have no idea what style they are! (suburban 90s? ) But they are in a heavy fabric, light and dark sage weave. Also I've just bought a turkish floor rug, it's in antique "washed out" tones. So I'm sort of going for english country/cottage blend with modern and without the clutter!! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 30Apr 13, 2012 12:23 pm I gather you both live in or near a rural area as I don’t understand the adoration for the chicken and rooster tiles in your kitchen and laundry. The reason the cow tile is discontinued is probably because there is no longer a demand for it. You have chosen the newest material available for your benches and they will look great with the other colours chosen so I would keep the kitchen modern. I have used moleskin for cupboards previously in a laundry with Royal Integra benches and it always looked fresh and clean. In my current white kitchen the splashback is grey gloss tile 300*100 with white grout done in brick bond like the movie picture and the size is fine. I really like the movie kitchen it has a great feel to it but I want you to go to the first picture where she is standing in front of the stove with the splashback behind her. Now imagine your big rooster tile in that space, I think you should reconsider but as several have said before it all comes down to personal choice. I found these handles in my kitchen inspiration file and wonder if they’re close to what you’re after. We are thinking of adding more pewter around to match in with the handles Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 32Apr 13, 2012 12:45 pm Didn't know they were your chosen handle when I posted my pics, obviously we both have class. I've looked at that picture and IMO my rooster tile will be PERFECT in that space!! The greens in the roosters' feathers will tie in with the benchtop. It would be a boring world if we all had the same tastes. . . If you've never owned chooks you'll never know how cute they are, some breeds are so quiet and love to be carried around and petted. As for cows- jerseys with their deer faces and long eyelashes, and black and white friesians are the cutest! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I love those twisty handles, but not sure how they will look on plain cupboards. Something like the top right knob from the link Excited posted or the solid bar one is more what I had in mind. That's because I'm having 2 pendants with wrought iron over main bench facing into "freeform living" and don't want to overdo the look: I can't wait to hang my Ashley pendants! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 35Apr 13, 2012 3:52 pm It's definitely all about whether you want to please yourself or go for resale. However we've always built and decorated to please ourselves and never had a problem with selling. Our first house sold in 2 days, the second in 3, both in slow marketplace, the second time our neighbor got mad because she had her house on the market for 7 months before us! We also got the price we wanted. It's all down to attracting the right buyer in the first place. And since I'm building my first country home- we bought our previous one- I am fitting it to the scene. I want my house to suit the region I live in. Believe it or not there are people out there who love the traditional country look. It never dates. Comtemporary will always date. That's why it's called comtemporary. I find the minimalist look very uninviting and cold. Like a hospital. But we are all different with different tastes and that's what makes the world go round. I'm not one for minimalist colour trends - I have enough government grey at work, I like to feel I am 'at home' when I am at home! But there are elements of it that do appeal - I don't like a lot of clutter, yet it can't be clinical either. And since I am eclectic in my interests it seems to show up in my home as well. Isn't that true of most home owners? That if we can express ourselves through personal touches, no matter how humble, this is what makes us feel "at home"? Whoops forgot to add: does anyone know of somewhere in Australia that sells traditional tapware that's not too over-the-top expensive? I hate the modern mixer that is standard with my builder...! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 39Apr 13, 2012 11:55 pm I wish we had a like button for treesachanger and moon rivers posts, I agree totally, I have had my the girls in a suburban house before and had no trouble selling. This time round I tried to do something different and my DH said let's go look at the place we bought the girls from because nothing made an impression on us like they did, they are a feel good addition, even though we have our chooks outside Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As you can see by the photo below, I like things a bit different, I think my babies are beautiful other people think I'm strange Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 40Apr 14, 2012 12:47 am @treeseachanger Glad you have the quote thing sorted. I have to tell you we had chooks when I was a kid and I can remember watching Mum ring their necks, pluck them and cook them, loved the soup she made. So we couldn’t afford to become too friendly with the chooks because “we was poor and they were for eatin’.” Where I grew up there were lots of sheep and Hereford cattle. We now live on the south coast of NSW a few k’s from the water, not much flat land for building as it’s flood prone but great for milkers, predominantly friesians. I had open plan in our first build which I gather is the equal of your free form living and when it came to heating and cooling it cost us a fortune, our last summer bill was $1,050. OUCH! The house was open from the rear hall to the front door including all rooms except bedrooms/bathrooms. In this place I can close off the living area to the entry hall with double doors and I put in a cavity sliding door to close off the living area from the rear hall. Don't know what your weather is like but I think it is a good tip to consider. Will keep a look out for pics when you start your build and hope it is not too stressful but every bit as good as you have dreamed.
