Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Bricks & Roof 21Jun 05, 2012 9:44 pm The weather has been relatively kind to us and we now have bricks and a roof. In fact, they did all of the bricking in just three days which we found impressive. They have now also started the internal plastering (they went from nothing to having plaster in every room in just one day). I feel a bit sad about having such a small front door but the plan didn't allow for anything bigger. Oh well, next time maybe? The hubby gets cranky when I talk about my "next time" ideas. We met the SS for the first time this week and he seems pretty good. I had a request in relation to the box/frame around the spa and he is going to try and accommodate, even though they are correct as per the plan (basically I felt it was too big in proportion to the spa and was different to the display home which was what I thought I was getting). I'm really holding out to see the kitchen and external paint colours - hopefully not too long now! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 22Jun 05, 2012 10:19 pm Wow, I love that roof line, looking really good. Things will go very fast from here. Hope your SS is able to accommodate the change - ours has been great. Posted in my thread that I'm now working for them part time in the show-home. So I get to talk about Jose building 3 days a week Our Homebuilding Thread 17th Nov - 1st meeting with PJB architect 27th Feb - Signed contract 23rd Mar - Plans approved 3rd Apr - Slab laid 18th Apr - Roof On 10th May - Lock-up 26th June - Handover Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 23Jun 06, 2012 7:59 pm Hi PS, that is so great that you are now working for PJ. It would definitely be a great job although I would have difficulty keeping my opinions to myself! It is great reading your thread to see what we have coming up next! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Happy cabinetry day! 24Jun 09, 2012 2:49 pm I was almost beside myself to walk into the house yesterday after work and find most of the cabinetry installed. There was then the issue of actually seeing it considering it almost dark outside. We went back today to have a good look and I'm really happy with it! I'm glad we made the decision to change to the white silk finish and we love our diamondgloss benchtop with a 8x8mm edge. Here are some pics! Kitchen (still needs overhead cupboards and rangehood and benchtop on island bench). Pot drawers View from the island bench through the bi-fold doors to the outdoor area Bathroom vanity ready for the semi-recessed basin (I've also placed one of our tiles above it as that will be the splashback, shower and bathtub tile). The green you see is waterproofing - I'm not that game! Spa bath in ensuite (I've asked them to adjust the box a little to be more like the display home, essentially a fraction smaller than what you see) Vanity in ensuite (I designed the layout myself) I'm a happy girl! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 25Jun 09, 2012 4:57 pm Wow looks beautiful. Can't wait to see it with all the tiling done. Love your beautiful bifold doors to the alfresco. We're 2 weeks off completion and you can't be much behind now. Our Homebuilding Thread 17th Nov - 1st meeting with PJB architect 27th Feb - Signed contract 23rd Mar - Plans approved 3rd Apr - Slab laid 18th Apr - Roof On 10th May - Lock-up 26th June - Handover Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Splashback Setback 26Jul 01, 2012 8:46 pm Things have been going well to date. The tilers have been in and are nearly finished (I will try and get some pics this week). We are very happy with how it looks, especially because it's been six months since we chose our floor tile and we couldn't quite recall what it looked like. We have had an issue though with the kitchen splashback tiles. We originally chose the colour to go with a grey kitchen however along the way changed to a white kitchen thinking "white will go with white won't it?" The answer is "no!" The splashback is very white whereas the kitchen is just white which makes the cupboards look dirty/cream in colour which we don't like. So we've come up with a plan to get a glass splashback to go over the top and hide our mistake. It is obviously another cost that we hadn't intended but hopefully it will add to the home. So now we're running around to get quotes and come up with a colour - it will be grey (like everything else we've gone with) but which colour grey? Who knows! I like the look of Dulux Flooded Gum but we'll need to have a look at a sample pot to see if it will suit. If anyone has any advice (or pics to share) I would most welcome them! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Tiles 27Jul 07, 2012 3:53 pm Here is the latest photo update. It is all coming together relatively well. The painting happens next. We've changed our exterior colours (again) but it was the painter's idea. We are having full strength Colorbond Grey pillars with half strength on the chamfer boards and Taubmans Grey Bonnet for the render. Hopefully it looks ok. Here is what the exterior looks like at the moment. The latest update with the kitchen is that we are getting a glass splashback put in over the tiles. As you can see from the pic, the tiles are very white making the kitchen look cream/dirty in colour (on a side note, the kitchen is pretty dirty at the moment, I hope those cleaners can work some magic before we move in!) So the grey you see to the left of the kitchen is a painted sheet in our choice of colour (Dulux Flooded Gum). We think it will work well. It's been an expensive mistake, but hopefully it adds value to the home. Here is a pic of our floor tiles. It is hard to see the colour due to dirt and lighting but they are a white gloss with grey marbling. We are very happy with them although they are a bit slippery! The bathroom has come together nicely. The grout is a lot more obvious than what I was hoping for. Next time we'll spring for porcelain. The blue you see is a glue (protective I guess?) The spa bath is still awaiting grout. I didn't realise that they needed to use the matt version of the tile (I guess so it is less slippery) rather than the gloss. Oh well. I'll need some ideas as to how to decorate the spa box. We are very happy with the ensuite vanity. I couldn't get a good pic of the ensuite shower. Hopefully next time. As you can see our colour scheme is very boring (grey and white with nothing else) so hopefully I can spruce this up with some colourful decorative items. Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Paint etc 28Jul 17, 2012 7:23 pm Everything is going along well however the rain has held things up slightly. The paint has been one of the scariest parts! The external render is darker and cooler than what I thought and the internal paint is also a lot darker than I was hoping for. In fact, the SS said that the painter commented on how it was a lot darker than what people usually go for and the SS kept saying "as long as you're happy with it" to us - I wasn't worried until he kept saying that! I guess if I had my time again I'd probably have gone with a grey-white rather than a grey-grey. Oh well, hubby said we can paint over it in 5 years time if needed. We've taken a step furniture-wise and ordered a voucher to buy some dining chairs for our home. Our current chairs were made from PU leather and have fallen apart (we will never buy anything PU leather again, it cracks and falls apart in only a couple of years). So rather than try to re-cover our chairs which was going to be very expensive we are buying new chairs which are totally different but which match our décor (white/grey colours). Here is a pic... We got a great deal for a voucher from Milan Direct - they have some awesome furniture and it is really reasonably priced and with this deal you get a 50% off voucher. If anyone is interested you can check it out if you're quick... http://www.livingsocial.com/deals/401712?rpi=70520776&ref=personalized-link-box-70520776&rui=124806711 Hopefully I will have some paint pics up soon. Internal paint should be done this week and external next week. Hubby sent a letter to our neighbours today to discuss fencing. We want a white (frost) colorbond fence and hubby reckons he can do it himself (with help from others) for half the price of getting someone else to do it. Once we get these neighbours on side we need to chat with our other neighbours who've already expressed an interest in having a timber fence, so hopefully we can come to agreeance (in my favour ). Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 29Jul 27, 2012 8:15 pm I am amazed how quickly your house has come along!! Love the grey and white- I'm a neutral girl too- mostly blacks greys and whites. Looks great!! You'll be in before you know! Build Again I have a thread, feel free to read! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57912 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Electricity and Paint 30Jul 29, 2012 7:04 pm Thanks for your comments Build Again. Our interior paint is finished and we are quite happy with it. When we painted some wood with a sample pot it looked grey with a little bit of pink (I was VERY worried about the pink). But on our walls it is grey with a beige/brown to it! That suits us fine because we have timber furniture and also an existing brown leather couch that we need to fit in with our grey colour scheme. In regards to external paint I almost had a cry this week after looking at the render colour. Again, it looked different to our sample pot (looked like 200% to me but DH assured me it was right). It was the final straw after the contrast colour on the chamfer boards was painted and it just made the render colour look more wrong than previously (I swear the whole house just looked like a lump of concrete!) I will try and get a pic for you. Thankfully we have an excellent painter, who is going to fix it for us at cost (around $500 based on the progress they had made to date). We are changing to Colorbond Shale Grey which we know will suit and also seems to be a popular colour combo with the Woodland Grey pillars we will be having. Paint will never cease to amaze me! We've learnt so much about it during this build. My new rule is that everything looks darker than your swatch so if in doubt go for a shade lighter! Our electrician has been in and most of the work has been done. We've gone with mostly standard stuff except the feature lighting below. The three pendants over the island bench were meant to be slightly further apart - I really don't think it's worth bringing up. I really like our entrance feature light. I would have liked it a bit lower but it can't be as it would probably hit tall people in the head! We originally picked a "ball" one size bigger but downsized (I think to save money) and I think that size is good for the space. Hopefully we get our glass splashback soon to hide those gross splashback tiles. The colour of the splashback is on the painted board in the kitchen. Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 31Jul 29, 2012 7:53 pm Wow. Lovely house! I love those lights - where are they from? The interior colour looks very nice. Can't wait to see the kitchen finished. You must be happy with it all. Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 32Jul 31, 2012 8:01 pm Thanks Learning. The lights are from Beacon. We like them a lot! We went to the house today and they've put the carpet in. Very exciting! Here is a pic of one of the bedrooms. It looks quite brown in this pic (sorry, we are taking our pics on the phone) but I assure you the carpet is grey and the paint is grey with a little brown in it. The media room paint is slightly darker than the rest of the house. A different view of the internal paint, it looks a bit more grey here. We have a dishwasher and oven in our kitchen now and it looks like our shower fittings will be in this week. We have concrete in the outdoor area and will hopefully have a driveway soon too. The painters haven't started repainting the external render yet, so here is a pic of what it looks like at the moment, we are happy with the chamfer boards (half strength Woodland Grey) but not the render colour so they are painting over it with Colorbond Shale Grey. We got some great news yesterday that our current home is under contract so this should work out perfectly to move from one home to the next. Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 33Sep 04, 2012 8:34 pm Hows it all going? Are you in and settled?? Oh how I envy you if so!!! Build Again I have a thread, feel free to read! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57912 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 34Sep 06, 2012 8:37 pm Hi Build Again, we have had an unexpected family health issue arise so this has had most of our attention lately. We are actually doing most of the move this weekend. I'll try and get some good pics for you. We are very happy with it all and can't wait to move in! Your house is looking great, you must be pleased with the progress. Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 35Sep 08, 2012 7:09 am Dreamhouse, your house looks lovely. I too am a grey and white girl no browns for me in this house so your colours are right up my alley. Reading your blog your build seemed to go quickly with little drama. Sorry to hear about your family health issue, I'm sure it makes for a stressful time. Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 - Moved in Pics! 36Sep 16, 2012 10:29 pm Hi TashnStu, thanks for your comments. I'm hoping the white and grey theme is in fashion for a while - we have a fair bit of it! So we've been in for a week now and have got a fair bit done thanks to a lot of helpers. Here are a few pics taken tonight - I will get a good outside one soon I promise. My biggest surprise has been how much I love the kitchen. The splashback issue was a blessing in disguise... having to get a glass one has really complemented our benchtop and brought everything together. We love it. Main bathroom (I didn't realise how masculine the colour scheme looks until it was finished, but I am happy with it). Living area (sorry about the pic quality for a couple of these). We've ordered a grey couch to go where our sofa bed is at the moment, and the sofa will go in the kids room/formal dining room. We love the bi-folds and they let a great breeze in. Formal dining room (as per plan) which is our kids play area for the next few years at least. Spare bedroom. That linen will be in the master when it is ready. We are yet to order a mattress for our new bed so are sleeping in the spare bedroom for a while. Second spare bedroom. Our son's room. Ensuite. Spa bath. We absolutely love it. It's been used about 5 times in the first week! If I had known about freestanding spas when we were planning this I probably would have got one of those, but I have to say it is handy to access your soaps (and wine) this way and is also easy to get in and out. I wonder how long this will be a novelty for? The study, media room and master bedroom are still very much a work in progress but I hope to post pics soon. As you can see we have no window coverings yet. I am thinking of getting predominately white curtains and a couple of roman blinds in certain areas. We'll just have to see how we go. I dare say it will be a number of months before everything is finished. At the moment we are working out turf and fencing which means more $$. All in all we are very happy and loving our new house! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53911 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 37Sep 16, 2012 10:44 pm Love it all! Tashnstu and I are matching lol - love the grey and white! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 38Sep 17, 2012 9:06 am Just beautiful and your colours are so classic, they will never date. Hope you are as happy with your PJB home as we are. Our Homebuilding Thread 17th Nov - 1st meeting with PJB architect 27th Feb - Signed contract 23rd Mar - Plans approved 3rd Apr - Slab laid 18th Apr - Roof On 10th May - Lock-up 26th June - Handover Re: Building in Qld - 300m2 39Oct 03, 2012 11:10 am Dream House, your home is stunning! Your colours have turned out beautifully and the spa is amazing! If I didn't know that it would delay our build even further, I would be changing our bath (which we were super excited about - long and deep). What is the paint colour on your interior walls? It is just the look I am wanting, we have chosen a dulux grey called "male", but even a painted board doesnt show the full effect. The glass splashback looks like money well spent - I didn't mind the white tiles, it could be accessorised, but the grey gives a really elegant look.
