Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 20, 2012 2:47 pm We're building the Creswick 24 with Porter Davis (fix stage) and we're not very happy with brickwork. I'm certainly no building expert but to my eyes it doesn't look great. I've attached a couple of images of the front entrance that I think looks terrible. I'm meeting with the SS on Tuesday so I'll raise it with him and ask that it be redone. This is a reasonable request right? To me it looks terrible. Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 5Jan 22, 2012 10:43 am That is definitly an eye sore and I wouldn't be accepting it. http://lindeman28.blogspot.com - Our building blog Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 6Jan 23, 2012 8:36 am Sorry to say, but that is standard acceptable work, and that is all they can do - it cannot really be fixed to make it look better. It is because of the way mortar is done between the joins at a corner, the only real thing they can do is to run a thick bead of mortar all the way down the join covering the mortar both sides of the join (or zipper as i call it) Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 7Jan 23, 2012 8:52 am I wouldnt be happy with it but i dont think there is much they will be able do to fix it.
I am no expert either but to me it looks like the dimensions of your home doesnt quite fit the size of the bricks, i hope you can understand what i am trying to say. The only way they could fix it i think would be to move the wall to the right of the doorway slightly left and the dimensions of your home probably dont allow for that either. Due to the way the bricks have to be laid (in an interclocking manner) its the only thing they can do to close the gaps. I would bring it up with the SS but i wouldnt hold my breathe at having it fixed Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 8Jan 23, 2012 9:00 am I have the same thing in my alfresco as well by the way, and i do not even see it anymore Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 9Jan 24, 2012 10:22 am Met with the SS today and he said they can put some 'corking' down it and it will look similar to what they use in the expansion joins. He said that due to how the brickwork is laid it is quite normal. If they can get it too look straight and balanced I'll be happy. Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 10Jan 24, 2012 11:25 am Its one of those things that just happens. Shame it had to happen at the front door though Given the brick that is laying front to back is narrower than the actual space it needs to fill there isnt really much they can do. I will admit that it doesnt look great, but all you can really hope for is that they can mask it somehow and make it look a little nicer. I guess that is an option we could pursue but hopefully we can avoid that. I'd be worried that a small render of that area could look a bit out of place. Re: Terrible looking brickwork on front entrance of Creswick 14Jan 25, 2012 7:22 pm Hi Kham, Our place under construction is very similar but no quite as prominent as yours. Of all the places that you would expect to have a neat finish this is one of them! The other options we tossed around were putting a moulding or trim in the corner to cover the join, fitting a aluminium angle and painting it a very similar colour to the brickwork or rendering as others have suggested. So far we have chosen to leave it and see how it all looks when our house is finished. Good luck with it. Scott We've looked at other houses in our area and noticed similar brickwork but as you like, ours is more prominent. You've given me more options to consider so thank you. Waiting for the interest rates to go down is also waiting for the building prices to go up, you will likely lose. Perhaps you can get the builder to lock up stage, but… 4 3673 The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18203 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17055 |
