Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 06, 2012 6:17 pm Hi all We are planning for our new home and are looking into our hot water solution. We have the warm Brisbane weather so our current plan is to put in a Solar Hot Water System (2 Solar Collector Panels feeding to external tank). From here, the water is boosted by a Gas Instant Hot Water System in the event that the solar heating is below par. We've recently found out about temperature controllers that can be added to Gas Instant Hot Water Systems to regulate the temperature consistently. (Max 42C for Kids; Long efficient run for bath; Preferred shower temp; etc.) We've been informed by our builders that we cannot use a temperature controller when using solar hot water also, apparently because solar provides inconsistent temperatures. To me that doesn't sound right as the Gas Boost is responsible for making bringing the final temperature up to a consistent level? Right? Does anyone have experience with this? Or have a Gas Boosted Solar Hot Water system with a temperature controller attached to the Gas Boost. Thanks, Jaans Gas instant hotwater temperature controller with solar HWS 2Jan 06, 2012 9:47 pm Hi The solar panels will heat the water in your tank to more than 60 degrees. This is then limited to 50 degrees by a tempering valve on the tank that mixes cold water as the water leaves the tank. The gas boost is only used when the tank water is not hot enough. If you set the controller to, say, 35 degrees, but the gas boost isn't required then you would get 50 degree water (limited by the tempering valve on the tank) coming out of the tap rather than the 35 degrees you were expecting. Re: Gas instant hotwater temperature controller with solar H 3Jan 06, 2012 11:04 pm Hi, The control panels only control the gas HWS, therefore can only request hotter water than is being supplied to the HWS. A solar system will get temps up to 80DegC, therefore supplying the HWS with hotter water than is wanted. The gas HWS cannot cool the water, and therefore is not compatible with controllers. The only way to get around this if you really want controllers is to go with a standard continuous flow HWS. AJ I looked into it a few years ago and my conclusion was to just build a carport that will support panels and get a system installed separately.
