Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 17, 2008 3:59 pm Hi,
I'm just wondering about how many tv points it's possible to have in a house without huge costs for special antennas. I've adopted a 'better to be safe then sorry' approach to my new house regarding tv points. I know I've gone over the top, but I just wanted the flexibility offered by having tv points in the bedrooms and living / entertainment rooms. Anyway, I've probably end up with up to 10 tv points - This may sound funny, but they'll only be 3 or 4 that will likely have tv's connected at one time.... Like I said, flexibility.... However, I know when the antenna is installed I'll need to ensure signal strength is uniform to all points. Despite having a good line of sight to Mt Cootha, I've worked on needed a good antenna + booster... But I haven't encountered any boosters that can accomodate the number of points I've got.... Any help / advice appreciated. Re: How many tv points possible? 2Feb 17, 2008 4:18 pm Antenna - amplifier in the roof space - 4 way 20dB coupler to feed closer points - 4 way 15dB couple for slightly longer runs and 4 way coupler 10dB for longest 2 runs.
Easily done. Use good couplers, nothing with plastic cases. Amp - http://www.hillsantenna.com.au/cattleprod/products/C2101MIN This should do assuming you have good signal, the bigger one if it's not quite so strong. I have one of these....wound down.. - http://www.hillsantenna.com.au/cattleprod/products/C2201MAX Couplers - http://www.hillsantenna.com.au/cattleprod/products/D2201T4W Coaxial cable - use stuff with white insulation inside, not clear plastic stuff. RG6 preferably. Re: How many tv points possible? 3Feb 17, 2008 4:20 pm Hi Blackmax

my hubby (sparky) says you can buy a box that will hold around the amount you require worst case you will need two but it will have to be powered ie power point in the roof Try someone like L&H or Haymans (electrical wholesalers) Good Luck Anne Grandview 36 on Beautiful Bribie Site Start Dec 5th 2007 Projected completion May 12th 2008 NOPE Handover 24th June 2008 Moved in 11th July 2008 Wating on one final thing - Still - Oct 2009 Re: How many tv points possible? 6Feb 17, 2008 5:39 pm Wow, thanks for the great replies. Very helpful.
Do you think I'd be best to source those products myself, or simple get a antenna installer out after handover and pay him to supply & install? I'm in western suburbs of Brisbane if it helps. Re: How many tv points possible? 7Feb 17, 2008 8:59 pm Well, one in each bedroom won't go amiss.
Then you should have one in each living room/area, especially if you have a separate home theatre room. Plus, one in the kitchen, one in the laundry, and oh! of course one in each bathroom/WC. Nothing like visual entertainment while on the throne, is there...? Fiona Re: How many tv points possible? 8Feb 17, 2008 9:45 pm This reminds me of the brochure from Clipsal (SA electrical suppliers)which waffles on about the need for TV and phone points in every room,
I mean, one might want to watch TV whilst relaxing in the bath or answer an important call while sorting the dirty laundry... Yeah, right. As an interesting aside, although people are putting in up to 10 TV points, how many TV's do you actually have? I think I am unusual these days in that I only have... cringe,cringe.... 1. My children have had their own in their bedrooms, which they bought themselves, but I have only ever had 1 in the lounge. I do not want 1 in my bedroom, either now or in new house, and I do not want 1 in casual living area of new house, I don't like the way TV can permeate every aspect of living, there will be 1 in formal lounge only. However we are having 4 TV points for resale value: 1 in lounge, 1 in casual living, 1 each in B's 1 and 3 (son's room) Another aside: how does a formal lounge differ from a home theatre. We are not great TV or movie people so we're not going whole hog with latest and greatest equipment but formal lounge will be the TV room and does have bifold doors so it can be closed off. Sorry to hijack your thread, Blackmax. Re: How many tv points possible? 9Feb 17, 2008 10:01 pm Hi Blackmax
Would suggest giving someone like Mr Antenna a ring. They should be able to give you an idea of cost for what you are after and also tell you where it is best to sit in the roof (so builder can put in power point for you). LOL But in our new place we'll have the grand number of two.
I'm a mean mamma who doesn't allow any technology apart from lighting and a small boom box in my child's room. He's not allowed Playstation or anything of that sort too....loss of brain cells, blah, blah, mung beans, etc. Not sure if a large number of TV points requires a huge alteration to antenna, but most TV chappies ought to be able to let you know. Wouldn't do it myself, but we watch little telly, so there'd be no point. Fiona Re: How many tv points possible? 11Feb 17, 2008 10:24 pm We're only looking at 3, possibly 4 points. Family room and study downstairs, and one in the TV area upstairs, possibly one in our bedroom. I'm with Fiona! The kids won't be having TV's in their room until they are old enough to buy their own! We don't watch much TV anyway, hence why we aren't having a theatre room either! We can always install more upstairs at a later stage if required! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! The house we're currently in has 2 tv points. I agree, 10 tv points is a bit over the top. And no, I don't have any in the laundry, kitchen, garage, dining, etc. There's one in each of the bedrooms, one in the media room, one in the family room, and one in each of the seperate living areas.
I should mention I'd consider it a rather large home considering it's single storey, and I did it more for future proof - considering the house has a lot more living area then where I currently am, I'm still undecided as to what each room will be used for. For the record, I HATE having a TV in a bedroom, and only watch the TV in the lounge room... If it was just me I'd have 2 points - 1 in the lounge, 1 in the family....But for good or bad, it's not just me I wanted to avoid having to have tv points installed after handover cause I didn't think about it. I won't tell you how many powerpoints I'm planning on having installed - because someone will probably report me to the government claiming I need my own power station. Re: How many tv points possible? 13Feb 17, 2008 11:49 pm Quote: The kids won't be having TV's in their room until they are old enough to buy their own! My kids bought their own when they were teenagers and had part time jobs, until then we owned 1 TV for entire house. And, Blackmax, I can see your point about future proofing (and re-sale value) hence we are putting in 4 points in most likely places, that is in a medium size 3 bedroom single story home. I didn't think you meant you had 10 TV's!!!!!
