Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 06, 2012 1:33 pm Hi, We've just moved into our new house and are in a Telstra Velocity estate. I've had telstra come and install the ONT and the TV and phone are working fine. We received our Bigpond modem for the internet but as i was setting it up it seems that there is no data coming through. I'm not sure what's happening. The Home Distribution Unit (HDU) we have in the garage is a Clipsal Starsever HDU. Looks like the only Line in we have is for the phones? Should the cabling in the HDU be done by the contractors or the telstra technicians that installed the ONT. If anyone can help me out that would be greatly appreciated. I'll even pay someone to come out and fix it if you're in the area. Thanks Telstra velocity and no data issues 2Jan 06, 2012 4:13 pm Hi I am not sure why you have a modem - I was under the impression that with Telstra Velocity that the data port was on the ONT itself and that this should be connected to your network point. What is the model number on the modem and how are you connecting it? To the phone line or to the data port on the ONT? Paul Re: Telstra velocity and no data issues 3Jan 06, 2012 6:10 pm The wiring diagram on the velocity site also does not show a modem, the ONT should have a cable running into it for data (Cat 5/6) http://www.telstra.com.au/smart-community/download/document/telstra-velocity-homewiring-1108.pdf?red=/smartcommunity/assets/telstravelocityhomewiring_1108.pdf Re: Telstra velocity and no data issues 4Jan 06, 2012 6:17 pm Hi Rox, Just to clarify one point, you don't need a modem, Telstra will have supplied a WiFi Router (prob Netgear EVG2000). We built the Trenton 21 with EB @ NRH - sounds like the EB sparky's have done the same to you as us. We were told that we needed the Starserve unit to be able to get TV, Tel & WWW from the ONT (BTW that's BS, the services are available straight out of the ONT) If you have a close look inside the Starserve cabinet, you will hopefully find an un-terminated cat5/6 cable in there - this cable will be your internet & needs to be terminated so that you can plug your Router into it. I've had mine taken to a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms & set up my network from there. A quick fix will be to find a sparky working in the area & explain your problem & get him to terminate the Cat cable for you. Probably 10 mins work (=$20-50 cashie?) I've knocked up a quick PDF showing my data setup http://www.wenban.id.au/HDU.pdf Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Telstra velocity and no data issues 5Jan 07, 2012 10:45 am That may be the issue. I can't find any unterminated cat5/6 cables in the HDU. They have have terminated it to the wrong patch. nrh157 Hi Rox, Just to clarify one point, you don't need a modem, Telstra will have supplied a WiFi Router (prob Netgear EVG2000). Inside your Starserve cabinet, you will have 1 cat cable wired up to the tel section input & 1 coax wired up to TV input. If you can't find a loose cat cable, I'd suggest sticking your head up the manhole & seeing how many cat cables are running to the area over the top of where your Starserve cabinet is mounted. Or maybe, as you are in a Velocity estate, just find a friendly sparky working on other houses & see is they are willing to help you find your data cable. You will need one to get your cable terminated anyway. Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Telstra velocity and no data issues 7Jan 31, 2012 8:51 am Sorry to jump in! Thank you everyone ! I had no idea about any of this before I read this topic. We have to have fibre optic cabling as part of our developer requirements and I was just trusting what our builder said. Now Im armed with info and PDF's. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!
