Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 31, 2011 2:47 pm Hi, We hv signed up with Porter Davis to build Chadwick 41 and would like views of people who have used downlights. What kind of downlights have been used and what has been the experience? Any feedback is greatly appreciated? Cheers Re: Should be go for down lights , if so Halogen or LED?? 2Dec 31, 2011 7:49 pm Hi mnsipd, LED definately. OK LED downlights are selling for about $50 each. They will pay for themself with reduced running costs in about 4 years. If you run them for 5 hours a night, 365 days a year most should last 20 years. How much is LED installation through the builder (I read on here that normal downlights are $120-125 - is that right)? Re: Should be go for down lights , if so Halogen or LED?? 4Dec 31, 2011 9:33 pm No idea. I know I can buy decenty quality ones now for $50 from the electrical wholesalers. If you are reasonably handy just ask the builder to install a socket in the roof (Clipsal 413) to each location a downlight is going to be installed and then when you move in just cut the hole in the ceiling and plug the downlight driver in to the 413. I don't know if anyone has tried to do this, but it should be heaps cheaper than paying builders margin on downlights. A 413 costs about $2 to buy and looks like this.
