There is a lot more information at this link about rough costs and what you might need. http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=1133 The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! We ended up spending $780 on electrical points but apparently a lot cheaper to put in while the house is being built Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 4Dec 15, 2011 5:59 pm thanks for that...exactly the info i needed. will def go with builder Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 6Dec 15, 2011 6:04 pm Our builder Bentley Homes were $46 for each extra double power point and battern light. Better to do it while building then afterwards where it costs alot more. A bank is a place that will lend you money only if you can prove that you don't need it... Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 7Dec 15, 2011 9:43 pm You could try getting it done through the builders electrician. That way you avoid the builders margin. Ask your builder if this is possible. We have done this and electrician will do builders work and also our extra add ons at same time. But if they say no you have to go through us, it's not just a money grab on there part. As a past maintenance manager for one of qld's bigger buiders I had many instances of requests to fix a light or gpo that weren't working, only to find they weren't in the contract but done direct with the sparky. There is also the real risk of over loading a circuit, if you add additional lights or gpo's to it at a later date. Talk to your SS and ask them if it's ok. The cost of a 4 outlet power point is less than $10 more than a 2 outlet power point and labour is the same. Why the $35 difference! (Would be cheaper to only have 2 outlet power points and change over afterwards.) We've only got 2 of the 4 outlets, so $70 wasnt blowing the budget. Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 12Dec 16, 2011 5:35 pm The power points are ok but you can get cheaper quotes from external electricians. Also downlight points alone .. with private electricians will cost only about $40-60 each.. you will have to provide the lights. Redink will charge you double of that. With External light points.. Redink is reasonable $80 per point..which is about that price with private electricians. That's through my own research. So if you have heaps of downlights , it'll be cheaper to do it after. I can't get a 4 gang GPO for less than $40 (commercial quantities). Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 16Dec 18, 2011 2:10 pm I paid $40 or $50 for double powerpoints and $60 to changeover to downlights from batten lights. Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 17Dec 18, 2011 6:31 pm Yeah just make sure if you are looking at doing any electrical's after your build and you are using a different sparky, make sure you have them give you an idea of price before hand. It may not be a case of just throwing in a half dozen extra lights and gpo's. It may also require another circuit be run. Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 18Dec 18, 2011 7:21 pm It should be cheaper to get it done by the builder. Even with their 30% margin, once the ceilings are in it takes twice as long to do anything. Re: Cost of extra power points/lights 19Dec 18, 2011 8:49 pm Hello, ANything being installed after the house is done will cost more. This is because of the labour it will take to install new runs of cable down completed walls. So dont expect an electrician to still charge just 40-60 dollars per powerpoint in a finished home. They will charge a call out fee, hourly rate, parts plus a percentage profit. Another way around this is to get the electricians to run the cables but leave them in the wall, not connected to anything. you may even be able to negotiate some cash for the guys to chuck some extra wires in during rough-in. It really doestn take long, expect around 5-10 mins max per powerpoint.. except in extreme circumstances. Another note, to run cables later on Internal walls means cutting holes in the plaster.. so you may have to add to the cost of repainting etc... happy building chris Electrical - Automation - Smart wiring - New homes - Commercial - Data cabling] 1300 050 315 www.cenemelectrical.com.au www.facebook.com/cenemelectrical Cost of extra power points/lights 20Dec 19, 2011 10:52 pm We paid $55 per double.
