Garage Door Openers

We've got the one below the top-range B&D opener.

It's the same unit as the super-quiet one, which is belt driven, but ours are chain drives. They were installed in June 07.

They have a fairly quiet hum to the motor end when operating - you can stand in the hallway above & hear them without any effort, but they are almost silent in the other parts of the house (garage is below).

What is noisy, is the chain drive, so I'd reckon if you went the belt drive version you'd be pretty happy with it.

On ours, the chains rattle ("tap-tap-tap-tap" as they open up) in the metal strut - the fitter apparently never fitted the little rubber guides that **help** prevent it, but fitting them made bugger all difference.
When I had a service guy out (they stopped because of a neighbour's wireless doorbell being stuffed) he had a fiddle & made them quieter.

I actually don't mind them being a little bit noisy, as I have had a few occasions where I have accidentally pressed the remote when pulling the keys out of my pocket, and numerous times when the contents of my wife's overloaded handbag have triggered the remote on her keys.
If it wasn't for hearing them working, the doors could well have been up all night without us realising.

I’m not sure what model we have, possibly low end. Although the motor and door are reasonably quiet, I find the chain and arm make a bit of noise.

I’ll be interested in what you think of the unit if you get it Phoenix.

we had a merlin opener at our old house for our B&D sectional garage door, 6m wide and all the mechanisms were heavy duty to cope with the size of the door. So we definitely heard when the door opened and closed.... We have BR2 next to the garage in the new place and don't want the door opening/closing and waking mr. 10 yo up at 6.00am when hubby goes to work.

In regards to the fob/keychain i'm not sure whether i'll go for those.
Too bulky to carry around in your pocket etc, and i'd also be worried i'd accidentally press a button without knowing it and open/close the door or turn off the alarm etc.

Or the kids would grab the keys and have a field day. So maybe just the remote units for the vehicles and one at the internal entrance to the house.

LOL, Jet, i don't think you ever grow out of the "let's escape" phase...do you???? By the way, my kids are 10.5 & 3.5 y.o.

I'm not sure if that's what comes standard either kiwi???

I've got the brochure and pricing, but haven't actually seen the size of the controllers yet. Well, whatever size they are they will remain in the car, centre console or as you suggest , behind the visor.....

I know yours will probably be a panel lift and therefore operate differently, but in the rental we are in (which was new when we moved in last May) has a B&D Diamond PD Power Drive Roller Door "lifter", and we have said if they install one this crap in our place we will rip it out and replace it.
We had issues with it right from the start - apparently it has a sensor in it, so that if it touches something it retracts up (i.e. car sticking out of the garage). Problem is every time it is windy or bad weather we have issues trying to shut it! We have sat in the driveway at times pressing the stupid remote 4-5 times, and it's not that the remote doesn't work, it's that it will close to maybe within 60cm of the bottom, then up she goes again! SO ANNOYING! So then you press the remote to stop it going right the way up, then press it again to go back down and it gets to about the same spot and up she goes again... and again... and again...
We complained to the Real Estate people after we moved in and a B&D door representative came out to look at it and said that it must be the "tension" so he did something to change/adjust it, but it didn't do anything.
And also more recently, one of the little lights in the motor box part (to light up the garage when you open the door) has started flickering and sometimes works (with flickers) and sometimes doesn't. Not very good in my opinion considering it is less than 1 year old!

I know there will be good and bad out of every manufacturer, but this doesn't give the impression of a quality product to me.

Yeah, because it's a roller door, the motor is attached to the reel (next to the door). It is definitely too sensitive (or something) but the rep assured us it was fine...
Not my issue - we're renting! I just don't want the same for our house!
