Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 29, 2011 11:20 pm Hi All, We're building a house with a ceiling height of 2740mm (9ft). We were just informed that the LED downlights to be provided are 4.5 watt downlights with 60 degree beam angle. Would 4.5 watts and 60 degree beam angle still work for a high ceiling? We will be having 40 LED downlights which we will distribute in the main areas (kitchen, family, lounge, dining, rumpus). We are building with Porter Davis and the downlights are part of their September promotion. Anyone here using downlights with their 2740mm (9ft) ceiling height? What type of downlights are you using? It's likely that a thread for this topic already exists. If a similar thread already exists, kindly point me to that thread. Thanks in advance for your help! Pa!asyo Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 2Nov 30, 2011 5:46 am 2740 ceiling height is no problem for any downlights, however, to perform the same as a 50watt halogen you will need about 12 watts in led. I am an electrician and have put in 1000s of halogens and am currently testing 9watt leds, 12 watt leds and 14 watt cfl downlights in my own house. 4.5 watts would be disappointing. Cheers Bruce Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 3Nov 30, 2011 10:16 am Thanks Bruce. That's exactly my worry. It might not be bright enough. Does it matter if I put more downlights in the kitchen and family room? The spacing will be around 1 to 1.2 meters. Anyone here currently using 4.5watts LED in a 2740mm (9ft) ceiling? Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 4Nov 30, 2011 10:21 am 4.5w LED with 1 to 1.2m spacing is like star in dark sky, and not a lot of them. i use 18w cfl with 1m spacing, and they are just enough, still lack a bit comparing to halogen. you really need to find out the light output spec of that 4.5w LED from PD Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 6Nov 30, 2011 2:16 pm That spacing is about right for family rooms but if possible go slightly closer in kitchen or follow the benchtops instead of trying of light the whole room. The 3 factors we try and cover are; 1. The right amount of light; 2.Looking right on the ceiling; 3. getting the wow factor. By doubling the amount of 4.5watt leds will just add to the uninteresting 'glow'. By going to a 14watt cfl downlight will create enough light, be cheap to run and maintain, but will not provide enough sparkle to your kitchen or floorboards if you have them. By using 12v 50 watt halogens you will get the cheapest and most wow factor that will enhance your kitchen etc. the most, but are dear to run and maintain and create a lot of heat. By using 12 or 15watt leds is probably the best option for running costs and globe life and dont dull after time like the other options, but are dam expensive and are yet to be proven for reliability ( I am yet to see a 240v led over 9 watts, so they require a 12v driver/transformer). For the last year I have been recommending to just install 12 volt halogens which you can pick up for less than $15 with a heat guard and wait till the price of leds come down. They fit in the same hole. Ideally if a 240v 15watt led comes on the market for less than $30 it would be a fantastic retrofit for the millions of halogens out there. I would make sure you got dimmers to all the living areas. I think 12 watt leds would be the answer and are getting closer to $40. Have a look at www.cableloc.com in Adelaide and part# K1039D2A-WW. I puchased 2 of these yesterday to trial in my house because the leds are set back in the fitting and dont look so bright on the ceiling. I will test them next week. Cheers Bruce Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 9Dec 03, 2011 7:48 am Sorry, no part# on internet page, so look at the 3rd one on the led downlight page, 12w 60deg warm white. Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 10Dec 04, 2011 5:40 pm Hi Bruce, Thanks again. Yes, for the family room, I wanted to maximise lighting in 'couch' area but minimise lighing on TV. For rumpus, I just thought lighting should be minimised especially when watching movies. (And I've run out of downlights For the kitchen, I added 3 points for pendant lights. It will make sure there's enough light in the island bench. But I'm not sure if additional support is needed for pendant lights. I'll create another thread for this question. Re: Advice needed: Downlights for 2740mm ceiling height 11Feb 10, 2012 10:46 am Hi Pa1asyo.. Can I ask what house your building with PD and if you recall how much it was to increase your ceilings to 2740mm?? Just want to compare with my tender because I think I've been over charged. Thanks Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria. Sleepers are 200*75*2000 mm installed over 17 steel posts.
