Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 20, 2011 9:37 pm Hi all, I am about to purchase a block of land in SA and although we are not planning on building for a little while yet I am getting excited already and doing as much research as I can. I am completely new to this and will most likely be on a reasonably tight budget when the time comes so I am looking for tips in terms of saving money on the build. When it comes to carpets, wardrobes etc does the builder choose the supplier and give you the cost or do you choose your own carpet manufacturer and negotiate pricing seperately with them? Are we better off getting carpets laid ourselves independent of the build? Another example is that we have lived without a dishwasher for a long time so would we save by getting a dishwasher provision but purchase a dishwasher ourselves later? Is this kind of thing actually possible or do you just have to go with the companies the builder has contracts with?? If it is possible does anyone have other tips/ideas along the same lines? Re: Total n00b needing advice! 2Nov 22, 2011 8:38 am Generally you can either get the builder to include flooring, and pay a premium, or organise it yourself after handover. Wardrobes - you get the basic shelf, anything else (drawers, shelves, extra hanging rails etc) you need to organise yourself after handover. You may be able to exclude applicances from the contract - check to see what they are worth, and if you think you can buy them cheaper elsewhere. Main flooring (builder has to do wet areas).. Just be mindful that the builder will give you a 'credit' for what you choose to do yourself. This is never the total price of the actual product so sometimes it pays to just stick with the builder.. We wanted to put in stone benchtops ourselves - The were going to charge us a '$3,500' upgrade, but to do it ourselves was a $500 fee for using our own supplier + a credit of $130!!! for our laminex tops! lol The saving didnt weigh up.. Safety say we stuck with the builder.. Building in Adelaide, SA Slab poured 08/09/2011 Handover 18/01/2012!
