Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 29, 2011 9:52 pm I've recently discovered our painters haven't used a primer on our gyprock, just the tinted paint straight on the walls. Are there any likely long term effects of this? All our contract says is 2 coats of paint, so no help there. Thanks. No primer on our walls 3Oct 29, 2011 10:08 pm I thought a 2 coat paint system was 1 coat of primer and one of tinted paint? Re: No primer on our walls 4Oct 30, 2011 8:01 am Rarely do volume builders use primer. I was chatting to our painters and they were saying that the builder pays them a flat rate as per the size of the home and the amount of features to be done i.e. stairs, doors, stained finishes. Builders will not pay to have the painters prime walls - they generally spray first coat, then cut in and then roll off the second coat. Hence the reason I have begun painting my own feature walls To my mind the builders paint is the primer Gumby Built a 40+ square 2-storey home with a volume builder Total time from land purchase to move in day 18 months Build time 9 months No primer on our walls 5Oct 30, 2011 9:28 am Thanks gumby! Glad it's something that is regularly done and not our painters being lazy! Re: No primer on our walls 6Oct 30, 2011 10:06 am You're very welcome Yeah just a case of cheapest minimum requirements The quality of paint is always builder's standard which is no where near as nice as when you paint it yourself. The amount they charge to upgrade is quite high too. My opinion was to wait until I lived in the home for a year to see how the light plays and then decide what colours I wanted. Have a great day!
