Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 19, 2011 3:14 pm After signing the contract, our builder now throws an additional cost of $20k for underpinning neighbour's carport. They say that due to the retaining wall, the carport may collapse. We knew the cost of the retaining wall before signing the contract. However they never mentioned anything about the underpinning. When we argued they say the need for the underpinning was discovered by the footing probe testing which was done after contract sign off. One would have thought that the engineer who did the soil test and cut & fill specification should have found about this too. We belive this is builder's trick to lock the clients into the contract first by not disclosing all site costs even though they were foreseeable and assessable.
