Browse Forums Building A New House Re: New house blog: **Kithcen** 101Jun 07, 2012 9:27 pm So a month has passed and stuff has happened. Painters have been and done the first coat inside and the outside as well so everything is looking spiffy, except for the fact that the carpenters only put in the batons for the brick gable and not the dutch gable... hmmmm strange. The shower has been put in and the tiler been and tiled the floors and the walls and done the splashback in the kitchen. So overall not really all that much left to go. Just need the second coat of paint and the fixtures/robes to be installed and that should just about do us.

Seems to be the mentality as long as all the pieces are put together in the end there is no problem. We had all our doors hung and handles put on and then they decided to take them all off again, see no logic at all. The front of the house is being done by the developer. We will have chosen a front fence with sandstone pillars connected with horizontal black metal slats. The driveway will be done in grey pavers with a cream borders and this will form the path that goes around the house as well. Our front 'garden' is quite small so still have to decide carefully what to ask them to do... Landscaping is not exactly my strong suit. Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 104Jun 07, 2012 11:19 pm Fair enough, yes mine has a slope towards the house on one side and then is level with my driveway the other side so I'm at a loss what I can do... obviously have to retain somehow but unsure how... I hate gardening, at my old house I pulled out all the front yard and put rocks in... looks great Can't and wont do that here LOL BB Barossa Bubbles Building own design Fairmont Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51265&hilit=Barossa+Bubbles Roof on-bricks next Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 105Jun 07, 2012 11:21 pm I would really like to install a moat with a draw bridge to keep people out... Dont think I would get council approval for that Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 106Jun 08, 2012 8:48 am HAHAHA Well let us know how you go with that request ;P I wont hold my breath for you lol. We have a couple of things in mind. There are some 400x400 textured matte tile (Mondo beige) which I think look really good and the other option is some 300x300 beige tiles (Solutions Light Beige) Both types of tile will tie in with the colour scheme of the house.
My query is how much will the size of tiles impact the overall house? They will be getting laid down the hallway and in the kitchen/open planned living area (Approx 50m2 in total). Was thinking if we could get grout that was quite close to the colour of the tile then the smaller grout lines would not be evident enough to be detrimental to the appearance of the room size. Really keen to hear what peoples' opinions on this matter are. Planning on making a decision this week as handover is expected within the next month. Cheers Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 108Jun 11, 2012 5:16 pm hi nglbuilder, your house is coming along nicely. we had our front entrance tiled a couple of weeks ago and the tilers advice to us when picking grout/tile colours were: If you have large titles, use a contrasting grout colour to make the tiles pop. And with smaller tiles, use a similar colour grout to blend well. Our large tiles in our front entrance were a latte colour and used a light grey colour to make it standout and it turned out really well. Our laundry tiles however were smaller, and applied this rule and turned out quite nice. The bank called, which never seems to be good. Apparently they received a notice for final payment today... Last time I checked the house was not finished... Anyway on top of that we were meant to be having our first walkthrough today apparently... Well it would have been nice for them to let us know so I could have said that is impossible. And to top it off our date for scheduled handover is the 25th of June which again a little first hand notice would have been appreciated... Now it has pushed everything into overdrive i.e. tiles/carpets/insurance etc etc the list appears never ending!!! Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 110Jun 18, 2012 1:56 pm Yikes .... would be good to have some notice ... looking good For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: New house blog: *Tiles* 111Jun 18, 2012 4:19 pm Hey nglbuilder, we were in the same position as you regarding the bank just wait until the last walk through than sign the letter for the bank (Sterling are getting ahead of themselves!). A little more notice from the builder would have been a bit better we were fortunate enough to have a good site supervisor who gave plenty of notice but i have heard stories of other people getting a phone call the night before first walk through! this is ridiculous as you need time to arrange things with work. Anyway good to hear things are coming along good luck with the move. Found out that the "finance department/payment department) sent out the notice under the assumption the house should be ready without any confirmation from the SS... They were just expecting it to be paid without the work having been done... Not on our watch!!! When my partner called they essentially told her in a rather defensive and accusatory way that they were just giving us notice to ensure the funds were available and ready for payment.. My response was well then why didn't you send a notice informing us of this instead of issuing a invoice to be paid??? And given they know exactly how much the bank is going to lend and how much we have already claimed that of course the money is available, you would think given every one of our payments has been made the day after receipt of the invoice they could show a bit more courtesy instead of causing all this confusion... Still apparently handover is forecast for the the end of next week. 0 4934 I hope this help you newhome_24, AS3958.1 is the Ceramic Tile Installation Standard.
