Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 04, 2008 6:46 pm We are currently at the first floor brickwork stage of our new house. We chose 'rolled' bricks with a flush cement finish. This cement finish was demonstated to us on site by the brick layers & we were very happy with it. The demonstration corner is shown below.
Then the bricklayers got to work & have nearly completed the ground floor. In the main, they have done a good job, but some parts we think are shocking. Below I have pasted a few of the worst bits. This mortar is certainly not flush ! It even has a hole at the top. The mortar underneath this brick is incredibly thin. The mortar above therefore has to be very thick. All because the brick is just not in line. Bit of a mess around the gas point exit. I just wanted to see what other people thought of the brickwork quality. We think it's shocking & have written a very stern letter to the builders with the photo's. Re: Bad brickwork ? 2Feb 05, 2008 12:42 pm I'm a little worried now that I am expecting too much from the builders. Does anyone else think the brickwork is messy.... or should I just accept their workmanship.
Opinions greatly welcomed ! We are loving living in our new home ! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... &start=315 Re: Bad brickwork ? 3Feb 05, 2008 12:45 pm I think it looks shotty…..
Actually ….looks like a White Iced Cup Cake! The mortar seems to be everywhere. It’s a Cup Cake! Thanks Michelle, I was beginning to think I was a perfectionist & the builders were OK. I think it looks disgusting & I should not have to put up with it. The builders promised a quality finish..... Lets see what they make of our rather angry letter ! Even I can set flush bricks better than that! It’s not quality work….not even close. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Bad brickwork ? 7Feb 05, 2008 1:30 pm Rickster,
In the overall context what percentage of the brickwork does this represent? Although it is messy after a proper clean it may not look so bad. Can you show me an overall picture of a bigger section? With the gas entry point...they are all ugly. Dont be worried about it as it gets hidden anyway. Re: Bad brickwork ? 9Feb 05, 2008 6:15 pm Hi everyone,
Here's a picture of a complete wall : I do hope it cleans up ok We are loving living in our new home ! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... &start=315 Re: Bad brickwork ? 10Feb 05, 2008 6:20 pm Better be a GOOD clean up!!!
Best to speak to your builder before they get to fare into it! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Bad brickwork ? 12Feb 05, 2008 9:31 pm Rikster,
Mate! You might have a slight issue there. It looks pretty bad. I would be raising this with your site supervisor and explain (using the demo pic) that the finish appears very different and that you understand that it is still to be cleaned etc but tat you will be keeping a close eye to make sure the finished product is as per the picture. If you are uncomfortable spend a few hundred at frame and get an independent inspection. It is money very well spent. Re: Bad brickwork ? 13Feb 07, 2008 9:30 am Excellent news. We met the builders on site & they have agreed that the corner section is bad & it needs to come down.
They will get the bricklayers to pull it down & start again. Phew ! We'll keep monitoring their progress I think. Would they accept it themselves? How would they build their own wall? Answers obvious. IMO you should never have to question work quality, after all isn't that what you are paying the building company and their supervisor to do! Re: Bad brickwork ? 15Feb 13, 2008 7:28 am It's just the way things are I guess. If we didn't question it quickly, it would have been too late for them to fix.
I'd rather check their work each week to ensure the quality is to my liking. Unfortunately tradespeople are never going to be as worried about quality on a clients project compared to their own. I know its no excuse but some brickies don't tiddy up as much if they think it is going to be rendered over.
No excuses though... I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17063 I wanted to get some thoughts on the quality of workmanship on the following brickwork? are there specific clauses in Australian Standards which relate… 0 4814 |
