Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 21, 2011 11:41 am Just wondering if someone can give me some advice on one or the other between choosing a Architect or Drafter/Designer. From what I can tell both can do more or less the same job but Architects tend to do more detailed higher spec builds, which I assume attract a much much higher cost. I was talking to one architect and the list of fees looks a bit scary. Not sure when I will be building exactly but one of the fees he mentioned was a "re initiating" fee of $2,000 if down the track I decide to get more work done if I change my mind or design down the track. From my understanding this is a fee just to get things moving and doesn't actually include any additional work. Has anyone used both and if so what are your thoughts on the pros and cons of both.

This cost me nothing but before I start spending money thought it best to get some opinions. To see what I got from them and what I'm looking at building click the link below. They work with a drafter at cost price but not sure if I will need an Architect. Design isn't to tricky but I want a quality job. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74txz6Rqs_8 Re: Architect or Drafter | Designing my home Video/Walkthrou 4Sep 26, 2011 9:30 pm You haven't chosen a builder yet then? I think either way (drafter or architect) it's an expense that's unnecessary IMO. I'd just wait till you've picked your builder and work through it with them. Or even two builders. You'd get a good feel for them through the process. Good luck!
