Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 381Apr 27, 2012 7:10 pm No, our doors are all really good. Our painters sanded them well ( they were a bit furry but sanded down nice) and painted them really well. Everyone comments too..it is the little things people see, like the doors...$15 more than a normal door. Well worth the money. Put a poster on the back of the bathroom door or call your painters back. They should be smooth as a babies bum Yes, the house is lovely. You must be excited to move in. Cheers for the kiwi!! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 382Apr 27, 2012 7:19 pm I don't think our painters even sanded them at all! A lot of our gloss work is rough as guts, the SS wasn't happy with it. I think any that aren't up to scratch I will put on the maintenance list. I have a feeling those painters wont be on our builders books for too much longer. We didn't pay extra for our doors, they were in the standard range. I was expecting an upgrade but got lucky. We had lots of cool stuff in the standard range, like stone benches, 2 pac, polished porcelain tiles etc. I guess you pay for it one way or the other, nothing is free in this game. Master 2 is a big fan of that penguin you put up before. He keeps trying to get me to show him the "clapping ducky"! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 383Apr 27, 2012 7:26 pm Owww, cute! Tell him it has come from NZ We had a local builder so he said a door is $50 and one of those is $65 . Do you want them then? Umm yes thanks All very open!!! Yep, get them sorted in 3 mths. Cos you will have a few marks by then and they can sand them back and sort them then. We had a semi gloss on them, so not a full gloss. Painters advised against it. Doors, same as our skirtings. We could only have 2 paint colours in the whole house, or we had to pay more..so tight wad me went for 2 colours, but various finishes, satin , semi, and flat ...ha ha, suck that boys! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 384Apr 27, 2012 7:53 pm Yeah we could only have 2 colours as well, one of which was ceiling white! I asked for white trim, seeing as they have to paint it with a different type of paint anyway. They came back with a rediculous price, I think it was $870??! I was like, WTF, that makes no sense!! But I'm a tight wad too, so just went with the same colour throughout. Must say I am pretty happy with how it looks. Now after seeing how they painted, I know why they charge extra for the different colour. They sprayed everything and put the main wall colour on arcs and skirts as well, in the low sheen wall paint. Then they went around and slapped one coat of gloss on the trim, even overlapped it onto the walls! Then they came along and did the final low sheen coat on the walls and covered the gloss where they overlapped it onto the walls. And they did the cutting in last. Bit backwards in my opinion... Ah well, they are painters, not rocket surgeons. Too much breathing in of paint fumes me thinks. Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 385Apr 27, 2012 8:01 pm Ha ha, I think so. We chose a white that could go on the ceiling (flat) the same white on the skirts and doors (semi) and a colour on all walls. Satin 2 colours including the ceiling! We are good ay! I have used wallpaper at the end of a hall, (neighbour did it for me) and that is it re colours on the wall Have some large pics though and decals in all bedrooms. I don't think I could choose feature wall colours if I did want them. White and beige me! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 386Apr 27, 2012 8:16 pm I don't think we will be doing feature walls either. We are painting our theatre dark, and I really want to clad my fireplace with stone!! I don't want to overdo it with too many colours. Might do a feature wall in the little guy's bedroom if it needs sprucing, but the rumpus I am thinking just decals like what you have. Saw some awesome african animal ones in the $2 shop the other day! I've got too much stuff to do outside before I even think about painting and decorating though. Gotta be practical about it, need turf so child can play outside without running red clay in all over my ivory floor tiles! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 387Apr 27, 2012 9:23 pm Forgot to say, we have decided to spend the money and upgrade our damaged door to a stacker. The price they quoted includes install, full stacker screening and any patching etc. DH decided just to pay the extra and get exactly what we want now, instead of having to pull the house apart to replace it down the track. I would have loved timber bifolds, but they just would not have been practical, given that we are bushfire prone, and we have tonnes of flies and mozzies here. Screening bifolds I know IS possible, but expensive and difficult. Also have heard that they are a pain to open and close, and I am lazy. So door problem solved. Now just to get other problems solved. Also, we were emailed our final invoice today. Do we just pay it in good faith, or wait til all the work is complete?? Jess Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 388Apr 27, 2012 10:07 pm Good call on the stackers Jess! I'm jealous! Re: The early bill. Maybe you could tell them you need your cert of occupancy for bank to release funds? (this is really common). Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 389Apr 30, 2012 9:53 am Well done with the stackers ... you will love them Don't pay the final bill till handover ... when you've had a chance to inspect that everything has been done properly - are you getting an inspector to have a look as well? For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 392May 01, 2012 9:16 pm Thanks Mike & Mclaren for advice re final invoice. I am going to the bank tomorrow, going to ask if they will release it to me as a bank cheque instead of paying directly to the builder so we have some control over when they get the money. the builder said they will give us keys as long as we have proof the invoice is being actioned by the bank, so they don't actually need funds in their bank for us to have handover. They are still talking handover on friday, went out today and only one thing off our massive list has been done- the fireplace wall has been resheeted. Still no clean, brick clean, septic, toilets, garage floor hasn't been ground or sealed, paint and plaster issues have not been attended to... the list goes on! I can't see handover being possible in 3 days, but we are happy to wait until everything is done, and done properly! It has been 7 months since contract start date so they are really dragging the chain on this build! I think our place is bigger than what they normally build, and being rural I guess doesn't help, but I am tired of making excuses for them being so bloody slow! Still within contract but frustrating. wildorchid Love Love Love your splashback! Thanks Wildorchid, I am loving it too! Cant wait to get rid of those hideous powerpoints though. I should have had them put on the side walls, one thing I overlooked in the electrical plan. But still very much in love with my purple Even DH thinks it looks awesome! CC101 are you getting paving in your porch floor at entry? I would like to do it after handover. It is already concreted, I want to tile it in a non slip charcoal outdoor tile, and the same in the alfresco. It will be added to the mile long list of jobs and expenses that just keep piling up Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 393May 02, 2012 6:48 am I thought I wanted a dark 300x600 charcoal tile too....till we had it laid and the dog and people with dusty/dirt/clay caked shoes walked on it. Only looks clean after I have hosed it and swept it with a broom. Should have gone a brown granite look or something....? Anything but charcoal. If I was in town, no probes but we are country with a dog. Paw marks...arrghghghg!! Justmy2 cents. It does look smart when clean though We have a lot of rain....so always paw marks!!! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 394May 02, 2012 7:56 am Fingers crossed everything gets done this week and you get handover on Friday!! Then the real work begins!! I am sooo glad you posted this! I hadn't really thought about them getting dirty, and we have red clay. I dunno what to do then, might just seal the concrete for now until the grass grows and we have less mud, or until I decide what else to put down Eiffel Fingers crossed everything gets done this week and you get handover on Friday!! Then the real work begins!! You're not wrong there!! PLENTY of hard work to come SS rang yesterday and said we probably wont be getting keys on Friday because we still don't have septic It's not like they couldn't have done it anywhere in the last 7 months, but they leave it til the last minute, and because the forecast said rain today and tomorrow the installer called the job off! Mind you we didn't get a drop of rain today. They could have done it. Not to worry, we will get keys eventually. Just a bit annoyed with being told things are getting done and then nothing. I have my MIL here for the week, she planned this trip months ago, we thought we would definitely be in when she got here! So instead of enjoying our new home she is helping me pack and clean. DH is home tomorrow for 4 days and we won't even have keys to move stuff in, and he won't be home again for another fortnite. *Insert swear words here* Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 396May 03, 2012 7:54 pm Oh bu g g e r!!! Sorry that the timing doesn't seem to be working out for you for this week.... Fingers crossed it all happens as soon as it can! Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51657 Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 397May 04, 2012 8:53 am On the bright side at least you've got MIL there to help!! The delays suck though don't they when it could have been done months ago .... Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 398May 14, 2012 10:20 pm errr.......knock, knock.....is anyone in their new home???? (just wondering how you are getting on??) Our building thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51657 Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 399May 16, 2012 8:28 pm No, still not in We have been digging for retaining wall and organising earthworks for the driveway and drainage so we don't go mad waiting! I have left all the dealings with the builder up to DH, I just don't have the patience anymore!! Long story short, we are getting the keys on Friday. I guess I should be more excited, but I'm just over it. We are really happy with the house, just can't believe how much they have dragged it out at the end of the job! It has been 7 months since site start, and after being told at lock up that we could be looking at end of Feb handover, we are just a tad disappointed. But these things happen... Big weekend planned, DH is only home every 2nd weekend so we have decided to do what we can of the landscaping this weekend, and the big move will be next fortnight. We have booked a dingo to get the levels right so we don't have water sitting around the slab, a hole digger thingy to put in retaining wall posts, a rotary hoe to do turf prep, a backhoe to do my driveway and the spoon drains, 8 cubic metres of topsoil and 30 cubic metres of roadbase!! I am sensing some blisters in my future! Thanks for checking in on me, I will get some photos on the weekend. Geez I can't wait to light my fire! Might chop some wood while I'm out there working on my blisters. I bet its nice and fresh down your way Eiffel! How is your place holding up to the cold weather? I'm looking forward to seeing how ours performs, surely just not having draughty old windows and cracks in the floorboards you can see daylight through will make a difference! Re: Boganswife's build- PCI finally booked! 400May 17, 2012 9:11 am Yay .... there's light at the end of the tunnel ... it does take the fun out of it when it just drags doesn't it but you're nearly there ...
