Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 01, 2008 1:21 pm Went to the house last night to check on the progress. When I got there it looked like the place was being fumigated for pests as all the windows & doors had been covered with plastic from the inside.
The painters had been & masked up all the glass & kitchen as they are "Spraying" the wall paint on instead of brushing / rolling it on. We are having square set corners downstairs & initially during the tender appointment we wanted our chosen wall colours with the builders white ceilings. They said that it wasn't an option & we had to go with the one colour throughout or have cornices to get the 2 tones. We weren't too fussed so went with the one colour. Firstly is it common practice for builders to use a spraygun when doing the internal wall paint? & secondly will they need to put on more coats as the paint would have to be thinned to go through the spray gun?? Thanks in advance. Mike. My Blog... http://ahouseonthehill.blogspot.com/ Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 2Feb 01, 2008 2:26 pm Firthy you've answered your own question.
Masking would be to hard with set corners - and the price is lower due to spraying - due to the time savings of spraying. And yes they will do the required number of coats of paint, plus any other prepping they need to do. FYI I sprayed a lattice fence with water based outdoor paint in one of my houses in the NT and it works fine. Much better than trying to brush it on? Steve Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 3Feb 01, 2008 2:58 pm If it's an airless spray gun, the coverage is comparable to a roller & brush anyway, just more consistent (no thin patches or roll-overs).
Some builders/painters have been doing it like this in Sydney's west since the early 90s. Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 4Feb 01, 2008 3:05 pm I think our painter did two coats (undercoat and one top colour) sprayed and then rolled the final coat.
As long as you can't read the plasterer's measurements through the paint (yes, do know of a sprayed house where that happened!). Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 5Feb 01, 2008 3:13 pm We just had a house we renovated painted, and it was sprayed. It looked awful, you could see through the paint. We got them to fix it and they rolled an extra coat over it and it looked much better.
Just check you are happy with the job after they've done it. Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 7Feb 02, 2008 1:33 pm Most project home builders will have included for 2 coats of spray paint.
The first is a tinted undercoat and the second is a colour coat. I remember that we were only given a limited colour range to choose from because that could only guarantee a select few colours to turn out correctly when used in this way. We stood our ground and asked for another colour that they did not guarantee and guess what? It didnt turn out the same as the colour sample, much more yellow. Generally its not until you start paying top dollar for your home do you get the 1 rolled undercoat and 2 rolled colour coats. Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 8Feb 03, 2008 8:10 pm Mike,
The spraying is fine. When you see your archs etc the finish is much better than with a paintbrush. You are one of the lucky ones too (or at least you should be) as Carlisle now use (after my house is finished) a real quality paint. They went from using Bristol (garbage in mine and my painters opinions) to Dulux. Matt Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 9Feb 03, 2008 8:13 pm Hi Firthy,
We are also getting it sprayed then rolled. I was very shocked when the builder told me this but apparently this is way the painters are going. There is one thing for certain, if I am not happy with the paint job, they can come back and roll it again. Mrs B Re: Internal walls painted by spray gun?? 10Feb 04, 2008 8:16 am Thanks guys.
Looks like I don't have anything to worry about regarding spraying the paint compared with rolling / brushing it. Only time will tell. I'm sure the painters know what they're doing Matt.. On the contract it says they will be using Bristol (semi sec). If they have changed their paint supplier since your build do you think they will still use the Bristol on ours or the equivilant in the Dulux range?? Lyn.. That's the first thing I will look at, the plasterers measures. I noticed a few around so that would be the first thing that would show up if the paint wasn't applied thick enough. Cheers, Mike. Unless Carlisle Homes did a variation for you (and probably charged extra) it would be Bristol. Worth asking the painters though... Thanks. Yeh ideally that would have been good, but have progressed too far now. Hoping some well placed internal walls fixed up into the battens will provide some… 2 5369 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7865 3 10177 |
