Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 11, 2011 8:19 pm We are building with AV Jennings and the progress has been very fast so far. We went to the site last weekend and the brickwork is almost done. There is just 2 concerns we have.. We choose off white mortar to our light brick (Perisher from PGH) but the mortar looks a bit dark, like normal grey cement colour. Can anyone tell if this is off white mortar? http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150799419215089&set=a.10150671115695089.692995.677460088&type=1&theater There is also some gaps between the bricks (no mortar). what to do about it? we sent email to the builder and waiting for response.. But is this normal and can it be fixed? Re: Colour of mortar 2Sep 11, 2011 8:30 pm cant view pic....we have off whit mortar and the sand they used was a light colour whereas the other houses in the estate their sand is more of an orange colour..I had the same concern until DH pointed it out.. Re: Colour of mortar 3Sep 11, 2011 8:40 pm Sorry. Can you see this one https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WoCCWGTVPbo/TmyP5bex9xI/AAAAAAAAAC0/OYULfbAUYzk/s720/DSC_4493.JPG Re: Colour of mortar 5Sep 11, 2011 9:16 pm The mortar still looks wet. You'll know for sure in a week. Did you happen to see the white cement packs (in the rubbish pile pehaps) or the colour of the delivery of dry sand beforehand? You are quite right to point out unacceptable voids in mortar to your builder. They are considered defects if visible from a normal viewing position of 1.5m away. They can be fixed by re-pointing the mortar. Care has to be taken to match the mortar colour. Re: Colour of mortar 7Sep 12, 2011 11:41 am ![]() The mortar still looks wet. The one way to knwo for sure is the colour of the cement and the sand. We were unsure of ours and then we saw the "off white" bags of cement and were happy. Sure enough after waiting a couple of weeks for it to dry out it does look exactly yhat. Re: Colour of mortar 8Sep 12, 2011 12:35 pm Needs to be off white cement and light coloured sand. As others have said, it takes a couple of weeks to find out. Doesn't look like a good start though. I would check with the site supervisor since it its wrong, the more they do the more rework there would be. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Colour of mortar 9Sep 12, 2011 3:41 pm mine started darker then yours and is very light/natural now. The brick cleaning process will probably also strip a little of the grey out too. I think it will be fine. 2 20396 Recently I moved to a 30 year old house and found within few months there are small brown nests in the brick mortar and few small round holes in few places of brick… 0 36175 |
