Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Excess bricks 3Sep 10, 2011 11:39 pm We were able to keep our leftovers, we just asked our SS who said it was fine. Most of the bricks leftover where ones that had scratches on the glazed face & were unable to be used so they were going to get disposed of anyway. We had many bricks left over and kept them. After all, we had paid for them, so why should the builder or brickie get them back for free? I used them to pave the area behind my shed which gives me a second outdoor sitting area, and I still have a few left over. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Excess bricks 6Sep 11, 2011 8:51 am We kept 2 stacks when we built. We asked our SS if we could though. The SS told us to put a note on them not to be removed when they did the site clean up. Built our letterbox with them and still had lots left over for garden edging. I asked him what do they do with them and he said they go to charity organisations. I need them for a front fence and other things so I can't see why they should take them. As you said, I have paid for them, so as long as I tell them, they are mine. Our friend is a builder and generally they allow any leftover bricks (broken pallets) to be used by the owners, however your quote includes only the bricks required to build the house, not any leftovers, so if there are any pallets left over the builder is quite within their rights to have them returned for a refund. Excess bricks 10Sep 11, 2011 9:47 am Our contract actually states that all excess building supplies belong to the builder. I'd ask your builder, they would be asked this often. I stand corrected. No worries. Something I forgot - as morox pointed out, stack then neatly somewhere near the back of your block so it is obvious when the site cleanup happens, that they are not to be thrown out. I guess that's OK. I am going to buy one of those "brick carriers" (brick tong is the official name) - $20-30. You can carry 8-12 bricks at one time - much easier than doing it individually. You could alos of course use a wheel barrow. RjG Re: Excess bricks 20Sep 14, 2011 4:26 pm Hi RjG; seems you have now answered your own question! FWIW I agree with the others that most builders are nice enough to let you keep leftover bricks provided there are not heaps of them and provided you also move them out of the way for the site clean. I moved mine with a wheelbarrow and the help of some friends/family just after bricking was completed. A couple of tips; firstly wear some good gloves so as to avoid sore hands, secondly stack the bricks on some pieces of wood/metal so they don't sink into the ground too much, thirdly put them in a vacant area where they won't be in your way as they may sit there for some time! Finally try to stack them in rows of 50 so you can easily count how many you have, also stack the couple of bricks on the end of each row in a different direction to the rest of the row so your pile is nice and stable. Good luck PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you.
