So many conflicting thoughts though which makes it so hard!!! I was very worried about the aggregate being tough under foot, and i have sensitive feet, so thank you Tinkster for that. I was also very concerned about the slip factor of the honed aggregate! so did a bit of research and apparently no it doesn't have much of a slip factor!!! Donna, I think when the outdoor room flows on from the indoors the seemless tiles all the way through is stunning, but ours isn't like that. we have our alfresco which has basic pavers, then we will have a pathway leading out to the patio so it is totally separate and not a lot of protection, so dirt and water would get into the grout, so can't have grout. However, we are going with the tiles we found on gumtree. They are honed aggregate and are tiles, not pavers. We don't need a poured slab though. We are getting a special something from somewhere to go underneath (like a road base but called something else) and that goes on 30mm deep. Then the tiles are layed, the they have some other special something that they sweep in dry like sand, wet it and it hardens like grout but is more like a concrete. it isn't pourous so not like grout in that regards and will repel staining...as well as being a light grey shouldnt show too much dirt. I am so excited as our patio looks fantastic all finished and it is different to everything else, and the flooring is going to be wow too! Found a paver who knows his stuff and is doing an awesome price for us. And best of all, pick up pavers Saturday and he will be here sunday!!! So very very excited! So thank you all for input and I took all thoughts on board! The timber decking was just going to be way too expensive and ultimately not what we wanted. $6000 was just WOW! Aggregate was a doable price at $3000 and now we are getting something different for under $2000...so saving money! And it will still look stunning! Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 702Dec 12, 2012 7:13 pm donna61 We are having grano poured when they do the garage, then we will tile and grout and then seal the grout. Can't stand weeds poking up between pavers! Plus I think a big 600x600 tile that tie's in with the interior tiling will look really nice. that sounds like a fantastic idea!! I haven't seen it done before, might have to research for my outdoor area!!! is there specific outdoor tiles? Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 704Dec 15, 2012 3:04 pm I think those sandhills are going to be there for quite a few years!!! would love to have NO sand blowing into our place!!! Picked up our patio tiles today and they are getting laid tomorrow. Cannot wait! they look so good, and they don't look like they will be slippery. they aren't polished tiles, probably honed. Expensive quality though! just the weight and the feel of them...oohlala! and at probably 3/4 of the price! and a great quote for putting them in...I am wrapped! And all before Xmas! Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 705Dec 15, 2012 3:59 pm Just saw the photos, they do look great! Can't wait to see what they look like once they have been laid. But I am sure there will be other's around when the time comes. Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 707Jan 25, 2013 10:26 am No update for awhile, sorry. They will come. Today we are getting our 6 month inspection stuff fixed. Not a lot to do, just a few bits and pieces. Benchtop is the biggest thing! Need a section replaced due to a bubble. Our backyard is taking shape. Patio is awesome. Love spending time under it! Half the lawn is done and a lot of the limestone blocks. My parents are building a swingset and monkeybars for our daughter, one day, so cant do the other side until that is done. Whilst only a few plants are in, i think one side is beautiful...one side is just ugly. But one day!!! Photos to come! Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 708Jan 25, 2013 10:42 am Well done, Vans. Lovely to hear you're getting on well and there's not too much to fix at your six month service inspection. I hope you all have a great Australia Day. Looking forward to seeing more photos when they come. Best regards, Jemima. Dale Alcock Homes. We love building. Around the patio we will have the limestone wall with mondo grass and rainbow quartz. The path we will have the tiles going in twos, with mondo grass and quarts as well. In corner is a lemon tree and we will put white sand in there...for the dog to dig under. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then the ugly side! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Eventually on that side we wil have a little garden shed in the corner, monkey bars close to back wall with a white sand sand pit underneath. monkey bars will be yellow (dd's favourite colour) and then a wooden swing in the middle, which will have a normal swing and a tube swing as well. Trampoline will be over on "our side"...didn't want that, but my mum and dad make these plans that are truly bigger then Ben Hur! Our front yard, WAS looking beautiful. Until they came to connect the power to the next stage next door. they ripped up our lawn, broke our retic (didn't know that for a few days and of course was right before Xmas when the heatwave was at its fullest) and also our kerbing. It will get fixed, but for now, our lawn is patchy and we have sand there too I was incredibly angry!!! Everyone got my wrath! But overall, it is just so nice to be enjoying the house and the backyard! I wish we would have neighbours soon. Both blocks either side are sold, one was sold same time as us, the other only recently got titles. I wish they would build!!! Re: Baldivis Build: patio getting done and ideas please! 710Jan 25, 2013 10:52 am I also need to add, cos I am a bit proud!!! I designed our backyard! And my hubby taught himself how to do the limestone wall and mortar etc. He is out there now finishing the path. He has done a great job turning my plans into reality!!! He also designed the retic and put it all in. He is now starting to change the front retic that the landscapers put in as it is cheap and nasty and awful! I laid the lawn and hubby did all the cuts. The other side of the path was done as we had extra lawn and we didn't want to waste it!!! So it was a rush job to do retic and hubby came through again! The place we got our lawn from (sir walter) was fantastic...we were worried about what to put under it, as our dog is a digger and most soil conditioners/underlays have that smell the dogs just love. he gave us some stuff, also some excellent fertiliser wetta soil stuff and the lovely named "biagra" for the lawn...and it is so green and lush, depsite this heat! Wish the front was going just as well...thus the retic is being changed, and we have since added all this lovely stuff to the front, but taking awhile to take hold. Might need another dose!!! Re: Re: Baldivis Build: backyard photos 712Jan 26, 2013 9:21 am We got the larger two sizes (ones along fence and for lemon tree/frangipani squares, from baldivis earth and stone, but you can get them from a variety of places. A place in port kennedy were the cheapest but not open sundays when we wanted them! Two sizes different prices but from memory about $8/block averaged out. The small ones around the alfresco were 99¢ but are now back up to $3.15/block. They were from urban stone. They are cheap, look cheap, but the grass will be on one side, quartz the other so only see the top. Hoping they go on sale soon so we can finish...otherwise just buy a few at a time! Time line on P1. Re: Baldivis Build: backyard photos 718Jan 28, 2013 11:18 pm Hi Vans, I'm very late to this thread and have been reading through your amazing building journey. Boy did you have some challenges. Well done for keeping it together. What was most interest to me was your bathroom colours. I was excited when I saw that you chose Platinum Micro for your bench top and got more excited when I realized why Smokey Sapelle sounded so familiar to me, cos that's what we chose ( prestart was 6 weeks ago I had forgotten ..haha) for our ensuite. What are the chances...really!! So THANKYOU so much for posted pix. Funnily enough the shower is almost exactly how ours will be as well in the 2nd bathroom, so that was a bonus too. I must say I do like the Antarctic colour you chose for your ensuite bench top . I wish I had of discovered this thread prior to prestart, I may have gone a lighter colour. I do like the platinum micro, it's just a little darker than what I thought. Are you happy with it? I mean we can't change it anyway, so I just have to be happy with it, but am just interested in your thoughts now that you are living with it. Did you do platinum micro for your kitchen bench top as well,I can't remember? Lastly if I could trouble you for the curtain/ blind person you went through too?Am avoiding this job as I have no idea what to go with. Many thanks. Your house looks amazo !! Belle Re: Re: Baldivis Build: backyard photos 719Jan 30, 2013 2:29 pm Hi Belle Thankyou for your very kind words! I love the platinum micro. It is lovely! We would have kept it in the ensuite, except it really didn't match our feature tile...only a slight difference but we noticed!!! We are very happy with the colours we chose! I don't think they will date in a hurry! Platinum micro is in our kitchen as well, but not smokey sappelle cupboards. We have licorice linea in the kitchen and laundry and I like having the difference. The micro goes really well with our floor tiles! Here are some closer pics for you...no lights on so lighting might not be good. Bathroom with platinum micro and smokey sapelle Ensuite with the antarctic colour and smokey sapelle There really isn't a lot of difference! Thanks Enelya! It will look great once all the plants are in...right now it is just a costly process...and i am happy to sacrafice not having all the plants in place so I get what I want, over a period of time. If I want all the plants right now, then the borders would not have gone in and it would be lawn and plastic edging...no thank you!!! I am really happy with how it is working out and that my vision is taking place. Very proud of DH...working through heat to get it done, and since this is his first go at doing this kind of work...he has done an amazing job!! Blinds we went through Perth Blinds. http://www.perthblinds.com/ We dealt with Paul who was fantastic with suggestions and colours! I had done a lot of research and price checking with stores and online stores, and these guys came in the cheapest, cheaper then online stores and they measured so we knew it was going to be perfect AND they installed too. not that they are hard to install, but something else you don't have to worry about!!! Re: Baldivis Build: backyard photos 720Jan 30, 2013 3:30 pm Vans, Your awesome thanks for posting the extra pix. Yes your right there isn't a huge difference with the bench tops . I'm glad to hear you are pleased with your choices. Like I said we can't change ours anyway, so I'm happy. We are doing a lighter tile with ours, plus we have a slightly differently cupboard colour for our 2nd bathroom, but I think it will go fine with the platinum micro. We almost did the platinum micro with the Licorice Linea, my friend had this in her previous house( that's where I got the suggestion for the colour ) but I didn't want to copy completely, so changed it to smokey sapelle. So THANKYOU , and for the blinds tip too. Will, definitely check it out. Belle DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair That laser level looks lovely!
