Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 16, 2011 10:16 am We are hoping to use stranded bamboo flooring (135mm wide, 14mm thick) in our new house, but have recieved mixed feedback so far from the suppliers and installers we have got to quote. The room area is 11m long x 5m wide with an ajoining 5m x 6m room in an L shape. The installers are saying that a floating bamboo floor will have too much movement and buckle over such a large area - it will be installed over a ply/chipboard floor with moisture membrane and underlay. Anyone else experience this kind of thing? I'm going to be shattered if we can't have the bamboo Re: Bamboo flooring - any issues over larger areas? 5Aug 16, 2011 1:36 pm wahoo The installers are saying that a floating bamboo floor will have too much movement and buckle over such a large area There are three methods for installing bamboo:
Ask your manufacturer/supplier which installation method is best for your scenario. Glue down seems to be the most secure and stable, but very hard to remove later on. Our floor did buckle, but we fitted the gap thingy and it's perfect again now. The gap looks fine, it has a cover plate that looks just like the bamboo so it is not really noticeable. Pick a sensible place for it, like between rooms/areas - where there is a natural transition. Our floor guy told us that no matter which method you use there will be expansion. It's wood. Re: Bamboo flooring - any issues over larger areas? 7Aug 16, 2011 2:02 pm Is this a bamboo specific question? Or would that apply to all timber floating floors over such a large expanse? We are having bamboo floating floors throughout our new house, and would be very interested to know if we need to specify an expansion gap over and above the one around the side walls in our installation. But only where the span was really big. Ours is in our hall, about half way along. No idea how it applies to other woods. Congrats on the bamboo, it's going to look beautiful. Re: Bamboo flooring - any issues over larger areas? 9Aug 18, 2011 11:32 am Thanks guys, I'll keep working with the builder and the installers - I'm sure they'll come up with a smart solution. I think Bamboo flooring is a great product and I agree Carmel, I think it will look great! I am looking at building a house. Has anyone used Construkt Homes (based in Adelaide)?
