Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 20, 2013 12:27 am Hi Everyone,
I have been looking at this forum for many years (reading or the great advice given) while dreaming of building and now have finally reached that stage. Our plans have been decided on, contracts signed and lodged with council. We are currently trying to decide on colours at the moment and running into a few snags and was hoping for some external objective opinions: Land is 4400 sqm I have included below what we have decided on so far Bricks: Boral Brushwood Mortar: While Flush Roof: Colorbond Monument Bedrooms + front living room carpet: First Avenue - Graphite Kitchen, dinning etc: Karndean - Art Select Hickory Peppercorn http://www.karndean.com.au/en-au/floors/products/ew02-hickory-peppercorn.aspx The main issue we are having firstly is if we should have monument for gutters, windows, roller door etc of if something else would be better? I have seen a few people with woodland grey and some with paperbark but just not sure. Throw me some ideas, have about 2 weeks until the meeting for colours etc and realising I need to focus and make decisions Oh have also created a Blog at the address: http://pcnbhouse.blogspot.com.au/ Will give an idea of plan etc. Thanks again, Phil Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 2May 20, 2013 3:03 pm What colour are your window frames and garage going to be? Perhaps gutters the same as your roof and then a lighter colour for the facia - but it depends on your window colours. You don't want too many different colours. Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 3May 20, 2013 4:03 pm Thanks for the reply, Yeah had the realisation today on the way to work driving past houses that have 1 colour for everything is not a great idea either. Starting to think that monument might be a little bit to dark and better off with say Woodland Grey with maybe a bushland facia so that it isnt too dark. So that would be woodland grey for garage, windows and roof.... Wondering if the white motar might be a bit much too. thanks again Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 4May 20, 2013 6:32 pm I agree, all one colour looks really boring. Dune might be another good option for the facia and it goes well with Woodland Grey. Check out Envisage. You can play around with colours there. Select external and choose a house that looks similar to yours. You can choose brick (render), roof, window, garage, facia and gutter colours. Your brick colour might not be there, but you can choose something close and use it as a guide. http://www.studiom.com.au/envisage Have fun Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 5May 20, 2013 6:37 pm PS - search for your brick on google images and on this forum - you're bound to find pics to inspire you. Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 6May 22, 2013 8:01 am Thanks for the reply. We have now decided on external colours which has made our builder very happy. Roof: Woodland Grey Gutters: Woodland Grey Facia: Windspray Downpipes: Woodland Grey Bricks: Boral Brushwood Mortar: Natural (Raked) The next big thing is the kitchen and what to do with the cabinets and bench tops. The challenge is what colour to do against the Karndean - Art Select Hickory Peppercorn http://www.karndean.com.au/en-au/floors ... rcorn.aspx flooring? Currently leaning towards white cupboards with dark bench tops but open to suggestions. Thanks again Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 7May 22, 2013 9:15 am Fleb Thanks for the reply. I really love the floor you've chosen! We're also going to do vinyl plank flooring but haven't decided on colour or brand yet - I like the darker wider planks like what yours. Guess that will be one of the next things we need to decide on. Your kitchen ideas sound quite nice. Maybe check out http://www.pinterest.com for ideas for your kitchen - just search kitchens or white kitchens - that's what I did. Have fun! Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 8May 22, 2013 11:44 am Houzz.com is a fantastic resource as well. This is my all time favourite kitchen: http://www.houzz.com/photos/333071/Parkwood-Road-Residence-Kitchen-traditional-kitchen-minneapolis My Hamptons build (completed): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63370 Moved in Wednesday 11th Dec 2013 Front landscaping completed June 2016 Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 9May 22, 2013 12:51 pm We are building with Alatalo Bro in Wagga Wagga (head office i think is Wodonga). Currently in that slow period waiting for council approval but need to have decisions made before that happens really so we don't delay the start. For an idea of the Vinyl planks they work out around 90-95 dollars a sqm installed which is a little more than other brands but everyone i have talked to has said that the Karndean are the best and worth the money. Cinder - love the kitchen as well.....unfortunately no timber or stone bench tops as out of the budget so now just a laminate colour to decide on. Thinking a black bench but not sure about splash back (tiles) Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 10May 22, 2013 3:33 pm cinder Houzz.com is a fantastic resource as well. Houzz certainly is another great place for ideas. Gonna have to pin that kitchen Love the splashback colour! I love white subway tiles but as Hubby only requested a few things in the new house, a glass splashback was one of them and since he has let me choose pretty much everything else I've let him have his glass splashback. That colour is a really nice alternative to the white subway tile. Thanks for the heads up on the price - we've had a look at a vinyl plank that Harvey Norman sell called Allure - it gets a good review too. Prob a similar price after installation so we might have to go and have a look at Karndean planks too. Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 11May 22, 2013 5:28 pm Going for a modem clean look through the house... well trying too. Will be a laminate bench top with waterfall ends and thinking something like the Ebony Marble http://www.laminex.com.au/colour-palett ... ony-marble Just has a look at your blog and like the style board idea to get a nice picture of what is happening in each room....thinking i will steal this idea. Are you far off starting construction? Thanks, Re: First Time Building - Decisions to be made 12May 22, 2013 5:52 pm Fleb Going for a modem clean look through the house... well trying too. Are you far off starting construction? Thanks, Sounds really nice! We're going with a waterfall bench too - Love them! We've got no idea when settlement will be. We are signing our building contracts tonight and hopefully will hear something soon about when the land will title and settle. Once it settles/titles our builder says it'll be about four weeks till they start building. Fingers are crossed for in by Christmas. I love the style boards too (if I do say so myself) Would love to see your style boards too when you've made them up! I'm currently second guessing my colour selection for our kitchen cupboards - you'll see this in my thread. Going to put a fair bit in the blog around the reviews of the products used such as the home automation, wood fire place and lighting as often can be hard to find information on certain products. Thanks, Phil Re: Re: First Time Building - Lock UP 19Sep 15, 2013 5:40 pm OK we have just reached lockup and it all seems like it is happening at once. We should have plaster on the walls by the end of week but still sticking to the 2nd week of December for hand over.....
