Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 05, 2011 6:06 pm Hi all, I see that some new houses, there are no trim between the wall and ceiling. I'm wondering whether this will make cracks look more evident when there are movements in the house. Anyone have experience or knowledge on this, or is it better to use the trim, not just for decorative? Thanks. Re: Downsides of not having Wall and Celing Trim? 2Jul 05, 2011 6:20 pm I think what you may be referring to is 'Square set cornices'. We're having these in our house because we like the clean look and suits the style of our home. It's extra cost because the plasterer has to make the top edge of the plaster wall and ceiling meet more precisely. When using standard cornices, the way the walls meet the ceiling can be less 'precise' because th ejoin is covered by the cornice. I'm not sure one is better than the other in terms of cracks however traditional cornices are glued in postion and you have potential cracking above and below the cornice. With square set cornice maybe cracking would be less obvious because it would be at the point where wall and ceiling meet? Not sure, but I would think cracking could be due to a lot of factors that would be independent of the cornice type. Re: Downsides of not having Wall and Celing Trim? 3Jul 05, 2011 7:22 pm We had square set in our last house which was built in 1990 and there was never any issue with cracking or any other issue with them at all. We are actually having square set in the house we are building as we like the clean look too. Square set wasn't extra for our builder. Re: Downsides of not having Wall and Celing Trim? 4Jul 05, 2011 8:32 pm I don't think there's much difference as far as cracks being more noticeable. If anything cornice would probably show more cracks over time than square set. Cornice tends to crack on the joins and corners whereas square set doesn't get that problem.
