Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 23, 2011 7:35 pm Hi All, I have been very busy designing my new house in Cairns. We have purchased a beautifull 1400 sqmeter block and are looking to build with Better Homes Queensland. We have 3 meter ceilings which create a lot of space and is very usefull in the tropics. One of the things we were thinking about was going for extra deep benchtops for the kitchen. The commonly used measurement of 600mm (590mm to be accurate). What we have noticed is that with the current cooktops, there is not enough space to put larger pans on the burners located at the rear, also there is no place to keep any small equipment at the back. Also, 700mm benchtops would give you that extra space. Any thoughts ? Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: Kitchen: Extra Deep 700mm bench tops 2Jun 24, 2011 8:08 am It's an excellent idea. We did this in a kitchen remodel many years ago and will do it again next remodel. The appliances stayed on the countertop all the time but the space in front of them was as large as having a whole countertop width. We had a fight on our hands with the builder who was confused about the fact that there would be a gap between the drawers and the back wall on the lower cupboard, but after I won my point he started doing the same thing in every kitchen that he built afterwards. It's really the most effective way to add countertop space. There was even space to have a slit cut into the granite at the back - and this is where I stored all my knives and cleavers. All you can see from the top are the handles. Really neat and great for instant and safe access. The only disadvantage is for really short people - the appliances are just that little bit further back. Our kids couldn't reach to use them until they were 10-11 or so. Re: Kitchen: Extra Deep 700mm bench tops 3Jun 25, 2011 9:51 am Hi Amadio, Thanks a lot for your reply - yes, it is great knowing tht there are others out there that appreciate this increased depth. In our old house, we had almost 800mm depth of benchtops. When we built this new house, I missed this point and we are left with 600mm tops - cost cutting on the builders part !! In the new house in Cairns , we think 700mm would be perfect. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Hi - thanks for your reply.
