Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 21, 2011 9:48 am Hi everyone, We designed our new home ourselves and worked with a draftsman/engineer etc to have the properly drwan up. We then gave the completed plans to 3 buliders to quote on. We have our now chosen our builder and signed with him and have let the other two know that they were unsuccessful. We would really like our plans back as this is our dream home and we put a lot of work into making the plans and we really don't want anyone else to have them. I just don't know how to ask for them back? Now of course they are our plans and we own them and are entitled to them but I just don't know how to actually write in an email that we want them back without sounding rude. What exactly should I say but in a nice way? Thanks Re: How do I ask for our plans back from unsuccesful builder 2Jun 21, 2011 9:57 am Just try to keep in mind that it is a business transaction - I'd just simply ask for them back, you don't have to provide any justification as to why. I would just say something along the lines of...... Once again I would like to thank you for your time in submitting a quote for our house (maybe add a bit of 'blah blah' - or not). I would like to arrange for our plans to be returned. I can either call in and collect them at a mutually convenient time, or I can send you a money order for the value of the postage - what would you prefer? (Personally, if they weren't too far away, I'd probably arrange to go and collect them to save any mucking around or delays in return). If you really wanted to write instead of call, you could write something along the same lines but you would probably just need to send a money order for the cost of returning them and hope they do it without too much fuss or delay. (I assume covering the cost of the postage might help the process and might even be the key to getting them returned - otherwise they might see it as an extra expense they don't want to bother with or wouldn't prioritise??). Or in the email you could just write "I will call in on Friday to collect if you could please leave them in your office. And could you please confirm this arrangement" ????????? Don't know if any of that helps, just my 2c worth. Good luck. So asking for the plans back, doesn't necessarily change anything. We sent our own plans out to 5 different builders for quotes & I don't like the fact that they could use our own design but at the end of the day if they really did like the plan they would just take a photocopy before returning them. If I did see our design being used by a big builder I'd just be flattered Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: How do I ask for our plans back from unsuccesful builder 6Jun 21, 2011 1:03 pm Don't forget they probably have already scanned them into their programs as well so more then likely not even asking for the paper copies back ensures you get all copies. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How do I ask for our plans back from unsuccesful builder 7Jun 21, 2011 4:04 pm Broom Have to agree with Casa2 on this one. If I did see our design being used by a big builder I'd just be flattered I agree. Besides, I'd be surprised if they would pinch your plans as they would be copyrighted. I could see a home owner taking a builders plans to someone else but I couldn't imagine a builder taking a clients plans for himself.
