Browse Forums Building A New House Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 21Aug 08, 2011 6:57 pm 1sthome - the water will drain away rapidly from the soakwell so there's no standing stagnant water for the mozzies to lay their eggs in. BTW, I can second Wrexter's recommendation of soakwell solutions. They were great to deal with - I've just had my 16 modules delivered. Now I just need a finished house to plant them round.. Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 22Aug 08, 2011 7:28 pm Excellent instructional guide. I know Perth is mostly built on sand (lived there for 10+ years), but some areas are not. That minimum distance of 1.5m in a non sand area would be TOO close for my liking. I would be running it as far away from the house and foundations as possible. Here in SA we have no such laws, which is just as well because a lot of areas are built on clay. Trying to soak away in clay that close to the house means structural damage. Another tip I learn't from living in Perth is the easy way to dig a hole in the ground. I had a 3' diameter pipe with no top or bottom. It was about 4' tall. I placed it on the ground and hopped inside it and started shovelling the sand out. As I started getting more and more sand out (digging very close to, and under the sides) the the whole thing just started to get lower an lower in the ground. Pretty easy way to do it with no dropping the pipe into a hole after, no sides collapsing, and fully compacted side on the outside. Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 24May 13, 2012 12:44 pm hi wrexter - did u compare these soakwells with the ones that bunnings sell? do u know how are these ones better than bunnings one. can u park your car or drive on these soakwells. I am bit confused as to which soakwells to go with. Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 26May 17, 2012 3:06 pm Very interesting indeed, being quoted $4200 for our Siteworks allowance Its listed/described as below. Stormwater Type: Spoondrains/Soakwells/Council System Might be time to dust off the ole shovel Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 27Jan 08, 2013 5:21 pm This guide is fantastic, will be using it in a few months. I keep stressing about how to do these. So with these polypropylene ones, don't they require a concrete lid in case sand falls in? I know it has a sock, but doesn't the sock break down after years? And surely pressure of cars etc over the sand on top will push it down through the sock? Yes, plastic are more "efficient" in that the sides are thinner, and thus you have to dig a smaller hole for the same capacity, but concrete is very, very strong and is a natural material, unlike polypropy, leaching chemicals into the surrounding. I'm not making an argument, it's just my reasoning. I'd like to hear more about why concrete would be a bad choice. Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 29Mar 21, 2013 10:37 am not sure if the info in this thread is 100% correct? i rang perth DIY soakwells and he said you still need to work out what storage you require as stated by council. for me this means 28 140lt polypropylene soakwells, but he did say because they are about 30% more effecient than concrete soakwells i would be good with 20 140lt ones, 10 out front and 10 at the rear. each lot of 10 are to be joined together inline to each other. so this guide saying you only need 1 per down pipe may not be 100% correct? Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 30Mar 23, 2013 5:12 pm 1 per downpipe is a bad idea I think, coz some downpipes carry the brunt of the rain and one soakwell will just overflow everytime. I ended up getting mine professionally done, I think he installed 11 concrete soakwells 600x600. He was cheap and great service, if you're in Perth and want his details PM me. Re: DIY Soakwell Installation 35Mar 25, 2013 1:46 pm My roof area is about 280 from memory.. not a small house. I've just rechecked the plans and theres 11 soakwells for 11 downpipes. There are 5 at the front of the house, I'm wondering if they all drain into several at once or he's done one per downpipe. I'll email him and confirm it's adequate storage. Called Henry from Henry's Soakwells as he was the only person that called back and a friend had used him before to install his soakwells. Supplied me with everything I need at a very affordable price with free delivery, and spent about 25 minutes with me, just making sure I knew everything I was doing! Very gentleman like and caring attitude unlike any other trade I have really worked with before. I would be strongly recommending Henry's Soakwells @ 04303 53 254 to whom ever needs wells delivered or installed. #firstpost!
