Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 09, 2011 8:38 pm As part of our build we're hoping to go solid timber floors throughout. We were initially quoted for Tassie Oak, but it's not the colour I had in mind. Just too light. I checked out a few flooring places and liked the look of Brushbox, but it's proven to be an additional $10k So the builder has gone back to the supplier and told them I wanted something darker which won't break the bank - and they're suggesting Aussie Oak. Now I am really confundled, because every reference I can find to Aussie Oak says it's another name for Tassie Oak? Can anyone shed any light? And in particular pictures!! Re: Flooring: Tassie Oak versus Aussie Oak? 5Jun 10, 2011 8:26 am Hi B Star - quite a lot - the entire house except bathrooms and laundry is going to be timber floors. Don't have the plans here to look it up, sorry! cbboyz - I remember reading somewhere that staining the boards is not recommended due to issues when re-polishing (but that may well be a faulty recollection!) The cost between Oak and something like harder and darker should be possible for about an extra $30 per square meter which is well worth it in my opinion. Are you seeking to go, select grade???? Is that why there is such a large increase. Select grade in Oak is still cheap where as select grade in proper hardware is fairly expensive. I would recommend if this is the case to go to Standard grade but a better timber. Re: Flooring: Tassie Oak versus Aussie Oak? 7Jun 10, 2011 9:05 am All good points B Star. Think I need to go through the floors in much more detail! 1000000% definitely add insulation. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 6191 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15905 Hi there, I'm a conplete newbie to this, but I'm looking to put a floor down in my 6x9m shed. It's currently sitting on a 100mm thick concrete perimeter (dirt floor… 0 6467 |
