Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 04, 2011 12:53 am our builder told us we didnt need them but now I am worrying. Final plans have been signed and everything . They basically realigned each standard light in each room to a corner, and told us we could have the downlights done at a later time. I flagged a junction box but they said we didnt need them. Can we still install the downlighting without a junction box in each room? The main light in each room will be in one corner, so we were going to pay a sparky to change that to a downlight and then install a further 3 at the right points. Is this okay? Re: do we need junction boxes for downlights? 2Jun 04, 2011 9:23 am They chain the rest of the downlights off the first so as long as you have one light point on the ceiling it will be fine. Building a Plantation Emperor Q1 at Spring Mountain Estate, Greenbank SE QLD Re: do we need junction boxes for downlights? 3Jun 04, 2011 9:25 pm Yes what your builder has done is fine. Your electrician will later connect the other downlights to the one that the builder is installing. It's an either/or option - you either get junction boxes, or you get one light positioned in the corner of the ceiling. If you had a junction box, you would not have a light point at all in your ceiling - basically a junction box gets installed in your roof space and the ceiling is left untouched, which means that the electrician comes along later and puts all of the light points wherever you want and connects them to the junction box. So he doesn't have to line up with one that the builder already installed. So either option is fine, it just depends on whether you want to have some form of lighting when you get handover (because if you get junction boxes you won't have any light til your electrician does the downlights), and whether you are happy with the builder allocating the first light point which will determine where the rest of them have to go. Re: do we need junction boxes for downlights? 4Jun 06, 2011 10:09 am Guys, if you put in a batton in the middle of a room (to save costs for now) can that be easily switched to 4 downlights around that spot? We have a double storey design and I'm about to attend my electrical appt - just wondering before I go for this. Also, can a single batton light be easily switched to a chandellier? If its on the bottom story the short answer would be NO to both. For lights to be place in a different position cable would need to be run in the ceiling and if thats not accessible well plaster would have to come off. As for the chandelier if it was to go in the same position as the existing light as long as there is something to screw the base of the light to (not plaster) it would be ok I would get some sort of timber structure put in place to support the future Light. Bear in mind also if the house is a truss roof design it can me a pain to get around the structure because the trusses are so far apart You need a sparkie with long legs or real good balance. Or as Ive seen a lot of timber walk (crawl)way placed in the roof Re: do we need junction boxes for downlights? 6Jun 06, 2011 12:38 pm nev25 If its on the bottom story the short answer would be NO to both. The chandelier is to be placed in the void space where the stairs go upstairs. Good point about the timber structure in the roof. Will tell them this is what we want to do from the outset. RE batton lights - I think I might just bite the bullet and pay for the whole house in downlights - otherwise once the crapet is done etc; they will make a huge mess! thanks for your advice Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13817 Hello It is good to have a planned bathroom reno to suit your budget and design, living for 10 years I think you need a bathtub 4 10352 Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
