Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2011 11:45 pm I'm the progress of getting our windows and doors manufactured and would like to know if I will be able to place my windows at the same height as the doors (2400mm)? My new home will have 2.7m high ceilings with 600mm wide eaves and 25 deg roof pitch. I have selected the high doors 2340mm throughout the house. I think it will look better from the outside to have all doors and windows position at the same height Can someone please tell me if a 2400mm high external door will fit with 600mm eaves. On the house plans, it looks like I won't have enough height as the drop from the eaves has reduce the external height of the wall. Does anyone know? Many thanks Re: Eaves and Window height position 2Jun 04, 2011 8:17 am There is a 300mm drop from internal ceiling to the eave height. So a 2700 internal ceiling will have a 2400 eave. So I think the doors would struggle to fit and would look a bit strange. If you went for 3000 internal ceilings, it would look fine. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. My building thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53000 Re: Eaves and Window height position 3Jun 04, 2011 8:42 am I am getting the external doors custom made together with the windows in aluminium. Should I get them made with an overall height of 2300mm so they will fit comfortably? All internal doors can still remain at 2400mm. Do you think a 100mm difference will be noticeable? Re: Eaves and Window height position 4Jun 04, 2011 8:55 am We have 2700mm ceilings, 600mm eaves and 2340mm doors throughout our home. With the exception of the front doors which are 2340mm, all our other external doors are standard height and our windows are at standard height. It doesn't look strange to me. Firstly, it probably would have cost an arm and a leg to have changed all the external doors/windows with our builder. Some of our windows are to the floor, I wanted them to remain to the floor so we would have had to change the size of the windows and then it gets messy (non-standard size, affecting 5 star, etc). Secondly, I don't particularly like the look from the outside of the windows sitting just below the eaves. We have one window that does this on the facade as it is a large feature window underneath an oversized eave. Personally, I prefer to have some brickwork above the windows and under the eaves. To me, it looks more finished. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Eaves and Window height position 5Jun 04, 2011 9:26 am Yes, Joles I totally agree with you that it looks more finished to have some brickwork above the windows. I like it a lot! Just to give you more details about where the doors and windows will be position on my facade which is my main concern. On the ground floor, the front entrance door will be 2400mm and the windows will be placed at the same height (there is no issues here as the ground floor as I have no eaves). However, we have a balcony on the first floor sitting on the facade. If I install 2400mm balcony doors and position the facade windows at the same height, I don't think I will have enough room to fit some brickwork above the windows as my eaves are 600mm wide (25 deg roof pitch). It will certainly be ok with 450mm eaves ( I think ) As the balcony doors are being custom made, should I just get them made at 2300mm high? That way, all windows and doors on the facade will be at the same height. I don't think many people will be able to tell that there is a difference of 100mm between the height levels on the two floors. What do you think? Thanks so much everyone for your advice on this thread. Re: Eaves and Window height position 6Jun 04, 2011 9:31 am Have you got a drawing of your facade? If the entry doors are covered a bit by a portico or porch, it may not be an issue. I've seen heaps of display homes with the larger feature entry doors and then standard doors up on the balcony, but the facade style will make a difference as to how noticable it is. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Eaves and Window height position 7Jun 04, 2011 9:59 am I just need to add...in my opinion I think it's important to have balcony doors and windows at the same height for window furnishings. I really like all blinds to position at the same height My balcony doors and in the same room as all the windows on the facade. Joles, I can't seem to attach a picture of the drawing. I think I need to get permission or something. I'm a first time user on this forum. I must admit you can't notice the difference on the drawing. The balcony doors and windows are all position 2100mm on the front elevation. But I just would like to have high doors on the balcony too to match all internal high doors. Maybe it just me being fussy! Re: Eaves and Window height position 8Jun 04, 2011 12:00 pm To add a pic, you need to use photobucket or a similar hosting site. Depending on what type of blinds, they can just mount them at the same height even if the windows are different heights, especially with Romans, the top of the window is covered by the blind anyway, you'd never know the heights are different. If you are completely OCD about it (I understand everyone has something they are completely OCD about! ), I reckon barker's earlier suggestion of going for 3000mm ceilings is the way to go. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Eaves and Window height position 9Jun 06, 2011 9:02 pm Many thanks Joles for your advice. I have decided to get doors manufactured at 2300mm high to ensure that windows can be placed at same height and can fit nicely under eaves. The 3000mm high ceiling is a great idea, but the plans have already been approved and building has started. Thanks again for your help. The two 15mm holes are obviously not compliant.
