Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2011 1:31 pm I hope someone can shed some light on this. Bricklayers are half way through finishing the footings and I noticed the mortar seems darker in colour than what I requested. I asked for Off white but the colour seems a light brown sandy colour. Initially i thought maybe coz the mortar was still wet but then after going down a few days later it hadnt changed. Can this be easily fixed if I tell them to change it to off white as per the agreement or will they have to knock it all down and start over? Re: Mortar for bricks dont seem right 2Jun 03, 2011 1:36 pm I have the off white mortar as well, ti acutally takes several weeks to dry to the white colour, and if is rains it will look brown again. Look at the bags they are using to make it, if the sand is light brown, and they are using mortar mix with lime then you probbaly have the correct colour going in. My only concern is if I wait it out a couple of weeks, by then they would have completed the footings and if the mortar isnt right then there may be a whole lot more that require fixing. Re: Mortar for bricks dont seem right 4Jun 03, 2011 5:30 pm The mortar doesn't assume its colour for a couple of week.s Take a look at the image below. You can see the difference in colour from the freshly laid bricks on the top (a few days old) and the bricks laid down below a few weeks before. The off white section was done 3 weeks prior to the freshly laid 'wet' mortar. There is (was) a huge difference.
