Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 25, 2011 10:31 am Hi all We have just bought our house and land package in Cranbourne We want to have a wood burning fireplace in our living area, for those who are familiar as one displayed with Metricon's Hayman29. But as per the builder it will cost around 10k.. Anybody have an idea of any alternative way? probably to get it done by somebody else after the construction? If so any recommendations pls Thanx Re: Wood burning fireplace-too much for 10k 2May 25, 2011 10:38 am I would guess that retrofitting a chimney after construction has been complete would cost more than 10k. Where is it on the plan ? http://www.metricon.com.au/melbourne/ho ... r-plans/29 Re: Wood burning fireplace-too much for 10k 3May 25, 2011 10:50 am laser I would guess that retrofitting a chimney after construction has been complete would cost more than 10k. Where is it on the plan ? http://www.metricon.com.au/melbourne/ho ... r-plans/29 Hi, That would fit in between room 3 and dinning in the plan. What if the chimney is built during construction and the fireplace is fixed later on? Re: Wood burning fireplace-too much for 10k 4May 25, 2011 11:04 am So the alcove is basically the fireplace ? I would think a lot of the cost would be the chimney (what are you making it out of ?). Bricks would be great, but I think that's where a lot of the $10k would go because you have to build it properly so the chimney "draws" properly and all the other fireplace science. Re: Wood burning fireplace-too much for 10k 5May 25, 2011 11:51 am If you're getting a gas line in your house, i'd go with a gas fire place. Much easier to handle, cheaper to install and cheaper to run. And they look fantastic... If not. Cheaper alternative is to go for a fire bot belly, with a chamber iron flute Re: Wood burning fireplace-too much for 10k 6May 25, 2011 12:52 pm We bought a Jetmaster open fireplace with flu etc on ebay for $1200, about $2500 less than retail. Our chimney didn't need to be brick, just the fire-retardent blue stuff, under plaster (sorry for my abundance of technical terms!) Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room. We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13728 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11588 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3340 |
