Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 18, 2011 7:34 am Noticed some wet bricks which are not drying out despite the dryer weather. It's around both a gutter down and a stink pipe (DWV) which vents into the roof through the wall. You can see the bricks are wet down at the base and the mortar around where the stink pipe runs is darker than the rest of the wall. I don't know if it's water coming in through the roof around the pipe, or water from under the house coming up, rising damp due to a problem with damp proof coursing around the pipe, or just water that came in through the unfinished brickwork and collected there, though that hasn't happened elsewhere in the house. It doesn't seem to smell but does have a reddish pigment, though that may be seeping colour from the bricks Any idea what would cause it? Is it something likely to be resolved on finishing the wall & capping the stink pipe? Can you see the reverse side clearly and there's no water source there? My guess would be water comes down from the unfinished downpipe, wets the top bricks (which look a bit damp), but also gets behind the wall and pools at the bottom underneath the weep hole, behind the bricks. More likely to occur if there is a puddle already. If this is the case essentially all I need to do is prop something against the brickwork there to protect it from the water splash and it should go away, yeah? I'll try it and see. Even if it pools at the bottom, should the damp proof course prevent this rising? If it is water splashing up then you can put something there to block it I would think. And ask the SS to make sure it doesn't get moved. The roof is now fixed up so hopefully this won't be a problem when the storm hits on Sunday. The brickie thinks the stain will come off during the clean. Fingers crossed.
