Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 12, 2011 9:18 pm Finally work is underway on our humble home. The first bit of brickwork has just been done, with various windows, door frames, etc in place. We have some structural steel columns around the house, that will reside between the inside and outside brick leaves. These have all been bolted in place. Below is a pic of the base plate of one of the columns... As you can see there are 4 holes in the plate, and only 2 have dynabolts securing them to the concrete footing below. Is this acceptable? Should all 4 holes be utilised? I'm assuming that if you go to the trouble of drilling 4 holes in the plate then the designing engineer would have expected them all to be used? Since there is very little shear load (hopefully none!) on the base of the columns, maybe 2 bolts is sufficient just to hold them in place. Since this is basically day 1 of the build, I don't wanna get uppity with the builder/tradies over a non issue. Any suggestions from a learned forum member? I'd love to get an answer before everything is concealed with bricks and mortar. Thanks in advance, Avion. the bottom plate of the column close up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ in context: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Anchoring steel columns - does this look ok? 2May 12, 2011 10:00 pm Ramset 10mm expansion bolts are good for a load of 6.4Kn in shearr in 20Mpa concrete and thats with a safety factor....... two bolts seems a little over the top to me. On a serious note two bolts should be fine but four would be better, not like they cost much. Back in the UK Drainage business we used to call it the battle of the first manhole. The contractor wants it to be as cheap and quick as he can. The supervisor wants it to be the best quality Once it is finished, and approved the remainder are built exactly the same with no argument The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
