Thanks Re: Solar Powered Electricity 2May 10, 2011 9:03 am Hey NiMa, We had Origin install our 1.5kwh system on a double. As long as you have good roof access it won't cost extra. We went with Origin becaus they offered pay by the month for the system no interest. Ours has been turned on for almost 3 weeks now and we have produced about 55kwh and used around 20kwh of that so the extra 35kwh we fed back will be a credit to us. When you say profitable do you mean you want to make money or come out with no bill or what exactly. Our choce for solar wasn't purely about making money more an offset and saving of what we have to pay for in usage. If it cancels it out we will be happy. So so far no complaints about the system, install or Origin. Everything is goIng well. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! And usually if you are in a double story you will run out of roof space before you have enough panels There is no way you can get to even in the short term. If you want solar to make you money or give you a $0 cost you will need to build the rest of your house as energy friendly/efficiently as possible and that will mean you will be spending money in other places that are not "directly" energy related. Re: Solar Powered Electricity 5May 10, 2011 11:46 am I have been looking into this as well. It seems that the best bang for buck is a 1.5kw system and thats because the government rebates die off once you start going bigger. Yet at that size, chances are it wont be enough to really make an impact as the largest part of the bill is often the supply charge and not usage. From what we could work out, payback periods were in the order of 8-10 years. (but this doesnt take into account price rises) Im interested in going solar, but the sums dont seem to add up. I think im better off with the money on the loan. Unless someone can advise otherwise.......please Re: Solar Powered Electricity 6May 10, 2011 12:05 pm Lunchtime I have been looking into this as well. Unless someone can advise otherwise.......please I've seen some financial analysis done on a few people's install and about 5% return was quoted as being possible. Since your loan is probably at a higher % than 5%, I'd put the money into the loan. Or find out how to invest in the Chinese companies making most of the panels being made for the Aus market (probably they are doing better than 10%) Or just do some analysis on how you could reduce your current electricity bill and spend the money on upgrades to your house to that end. When the payback period comes down to say 3 years I might reconsider it.
