Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 09, 2011 1:04 pm Does anyone have any experience building with rammed earth? I have looked at the Earth Building Association of Australia website and have also found a rammed earth contractor willing to work in my area (www.rammedearthsolutions.com.au). I was wondering if I could use soil off my own land. Rammed Earth Solutions said that they could test my soil for suitability, but does anyone know of a type of soil I should be looking for? Re: Rammed earth 2May 31, 2011 7:31 pm I found the answer. The rammed earth contractor did the testing and gave me all the information I needed. It turns out that the soil on my land is not appropriate due to the high clay content and volume required. We are using a soil from a quarry not too far away. how do lenders feel about rammed earth? 3Mar 12, 2012 5:20 pm Hi Mollydoggy, how goes the ramming? My partner and I are looking to build on acreage, and we want to use materials like strawbales for the shed, maybe mud bricks for the north face of the house, and ideally the whole south face will be a concrete wall, underground! we have lots of ideas, and there's plenty of resources out there, but we would love some advice about doing this kind of build on a mortgage. we have heard that lenders may be reluctant to take a risk on such a non-standard build - what was your experience? or were you lucky enough to build with cash? Cheers! Ruth |
