It is usually coated in a fine oil to protect it from rusting before being installed. This has to be removed correctly before painting. Since it is installed first and then painted, the fascia and gutter not exposed after installation (ie top of fascia and bottom of gutter) cannot be painted and is then a 'weakspot' for corrosion. We had zincalum on previous house. The original paint faded, went powdery (it was a very light colour anyway) and peeled after 4 years and because of the bad prep work, the bottom of some of the guttering rusted out. Repainting was a nightmare because it had to be stripped right back to bare metal and primed and painted correctly. Go colourbond.
