Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 03, 2011 10:50 am Can't believe how hard it is to try and pick everything for a new home. Our build started a lot quicker than we expected in the end and we are having to make decisions with haste. So question Number 1 - What do I need to pick first when it comes to tiles, benchtops/cupboards and paint. I've been told tiles yet I feel I need to be happy with the benchtops. Any help appreciated. At this stage all I can tell you is we are after a fairly nuetral colour scheme in the browny tones. The paint colour we had been considering although this can change is Buff It (quarter or half strength). We will have fairly light timber floors in the living. We have always liked Mushroom Linea for the doors in the main bathroom and the laundry but unsure on a benchtop to go with this. There is a possiblility the tile could be of a darker shade in these two rooms but not a definate. Question 2 - What benchtop would you put with Mushroom Linea for these 2 areas. For our ensuite, we are considering Stipple Seal unsure if Diamond Gloss or Natural finish and need a cupboard colour to go with it. I have found a tile I like which will be the same on wall as floor, glossy on wall, flat on floor in a lighter colour. Sorry have no pic to show of the tile. Would it be funny to make both the benchtop and the cupboards Stipple Seal? It will be a wall hung vanity. Question 3 - What cupboard would you put with Stipple Seal Kitchen...I have no idea. We will be going laminex. Thinking of Pure Mineralstone benches, maybe 2 tone cupboards. I don't mind Pearl Grey and Baye but wondering if that throws too much of a grey/greeny tone, maybe White and Baye??? Question 4 - any ideas of a good neutral kitchen colour combo to suite wood floors Would also like opinions on Diamondgloss for benchtops. I did speak to a cabinet maker recently and he was all for diamondgloss in kitchens yet some readings on here indicate differently? Thanks to anyone with any suggestions Re: Building is doing my head in!!!!! 2May 03, 2011 11:54 am Geez that's a lot of questions and yes there are stacks of choices to make when you are building. OK so whether you pick tiles or paint/cupboards/benches first depends on your builder so call them and ask. In my case I had an appointment with the "colour consultant" at the "showroom" of my builder to select paint/cupboards/benchtops/splashbacks/carpet/wood floor and other such fittings and fixtures (including showerheads, basins, baths, doors and door handles). I then later (after building had commenced) had a separate appointment at the tile place to select my tiles. A lot of the questions you have about what goes with what may be answered by the colour consultant but also by looking at the samples of various benchtops/cupboards against each other. In the end it is a matter of personal choice and taste so noone can really tell you what "goes" with what. I would suggest you try some of the software packages online (metricon has one) which allow you to select various colors and see what they look like in a picture of the room in question (bathroom, kitchen etc). My other suggestion would be to take someone who you trust along with you to the selections and run ideas past them. Also the person who you do the selections with can often be very helpful (the guy I had at the tile place was incredibly knowledgable). Make sure you take the samples from each selection along with you to appointment so you can refer to them if necessary. Otherwise have a look through some pictures online, in magazines (and here on homeone) to get an idea of which sort of colour schemes you like. There is a "show me your kitchen" thread which is particularly useful. Visiting display homes may also assist. Good luck with it all! Saying that don't let the builder rush you into choosing colours, tiles, carpet etc as these are things you you will be living with for a long time and you don't want to get to handover and say "I wish we didn't choose that colour" Visit Display homes to get ideas and take advantage of the builders colour consultant if they have one. We also found out who the suppliers were for alot of the choices and we visited some of their showrooms. Between juggling work, kids and everything else I am so worried about making wrong decisions. I can't really hold my brother in law up as he has other house to do after ours. My indecisiveness does not help the situation either. Still keen to hear if anyone has used the above colours at all and their thoughts. Re: Building is doing my head in!!!!! 6May 03, 2011 2:11 pm Question 2 - What benchtop would you put with Mushroom Linea for these 2 areas. Probably a whitish benchtop colour to contrast. I like White valencia in the laminex range which I am using to contrast a more stripey bold colour in the shared bathrrom. Would it be funny to make both the benchtop and the cupboards Stipple Seal? It will be a wall hung vanity. Question 3 - What cupboard would you put with Stipple Seal I would consider something lighter like Alaskan or something similar unless you having distinctive feature tiles in which case probably something without a pattern http://www.laminex.com.au/colour-palett ... te/alaskan I've seen this used in some display homes and it looks really nice. Question 4 - any ideas of a good neutral kitchen colour combo to suite wood floors Probably white /off white cupboards would leave the wooden floors as more of the feature. I'd go for a solid block of colour for the cupboards rather than something with a pattern as this would detract from the floor. I found the people in my local Laminex store pretty helpful and its always best to see colour in the flesh (some colours I had thought might work well on the website actually looked a bit different in the flesh). I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
