Amazing how some curtains can change the whole feel of the room, it all seems much more homely now! Pics to come soon Yesterday our builder was visiting with their photographer to take some pics of the house, they want to use it on their website, since they don't have displays they take pics of some houses to show what they have done. And they have asked us if they can enter our house in the HIA Awards! They want to enter it in it's price range category as well as the kitchen & bathroom It's very exciting! I don't want to get my hopes up of winning of course but it is still very flattering to be entered. The awards aren't until October but they have to finalise the entries by July, sometime before the awards the judges will come out to have a look. So excited!! We are going to get copies of all the pics the photographer took lastnight so I will post some up then Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 344Apr 04, 2012 1:53 pm Oooh that's exciting ... can't wait to see the pics! We are massively excited! They have won several HIA awards over recent years so you never know I forgot to mention our bad news...DH killed a BABY BROWN SNAKE *shudder.... on the weekend! Eeeek! While he was pulling out the metal bath from the shoebox, he tipped it to one side & then saw blood, we just saw it slither into a hole in the concrete, it was about a foot long. It was cut 3/4's in half though so it wouldn't have lasted long. We are just about finished our landscape layout, I'll post a pic once it's done. The actual landscaping is going to be a big, expensive job so we are going to do it in stages. Might be a 2-3yrs before it's all completed! How could it NOT win?? Our builder is going to take pics at our place too, don't think we will be up for any awards though... its a testament to your fab design and selections, that's for sure! I would love to see the rest of your window coverings! I want to do plantations in the master and ensuite, haven't convinced DH yet. I will probably still want blockout curtains as well though cause I hate any tiny bit of light when I'm trying to sleep. DH reckons I sleep with my eyes open lol. Do they cut out much light? Scary to think you have brown snakes around! I hope the kids know to be extra careful. I'm always really cautious, especially under sheets of tin and places that are nice and warm for them to hide out. Do you have much demo rubbish laying around from the shoebox? We have been lucky not to have seen any snakes yet at the new house. When your builder puts your photos on the website you will have to post the links for us! Jess Thanks Jess, I have to admit I was surprised when they asked us, I imagine we are going to be up against some beautiful homes though! Still, it's put a smile on my face to think we are in there with a shot I will definitely put the window covering pics up, the photographer took shots of every room & when I looked over his shoulder I could see he was getting some good ones so I'll post them all then. Despite having a good SLR camera I'm a cr@p photographer & can't seem to get a decent shot of the curtains, I think pointing the camera at the window is confusing me with the settings due to the different lighting The plantation shutters are great though, we just got them on the 2 front bedrooms as they are the ones you see from the front. They are great though, DS's room gets really hot as he gets the western sun in the arvo. It has made a huge difference as it provides heaps of insulation. They also do a really good job of darkening the room, a tiny bit of light gets through each slat but hardly any. We have blockouts in our bedroom & they still let in light above the curtains so if you do decide to get fabric make sure you get a pelmet. Brown snakes are common in SA & very common where we are since it's rural. It is the 1st one we've seen though thankfully. DH did have lots of rubbish piles around the shoebox but after that incident he has cleaned up alot! I tell 4yr old DD about the dangers of snakes but I don't think she fully understands me yet, DS is 2.5yrs so he has no idea I am cautious though & go outside with them, encourage them to stomp their feet, not go in any long grass & there is no rubbish around where they are. I also send the dog out with them to sniff around, she's very protective of the kids! I hope you don't see any snakes around! Do you have any venemous ones? Baby browns would have to be the worst as they are already so poisonous but they are feisty too Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 350Apr 04, 2012 10:17 pm Hi Broom, great news about the house in the running for an award When I was spraying at our block a couple of weeks ago, I caught a movement out of the side of my eye and a baby brown was only a couple of inches away from my foot but moving quickly away up the slope. I followed it to see where it was going as I didn't want to work if it was nearby but it was not stopping anyway. It eventually went sideways and along the bottom of the fence until it found a hole and went through the other side which is hills face so I knew I wouldn't see it again. We will snake proof as much as we can when we landscape to help prevent them coming in and keep the garden tidy so hopefully discourage their presence. I am aware that they can turn up anywhere though. About this time last year in our previous house we had a baby brown in the back garden, it look white though, apparently brown snakes aren't only brown https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 351Apr 05, 2012 8:34 am dreamcometrue Hi Broom, great news about the house in the running for an award When I was spraying at our block a couple of weeks ago, I caught a movement out of the side of my eye and a baby brown was only a couple of inches away from my foot but moving quickly away up the slope. I think you did the right thing though, at least you knew where it went, I will have to remember that for next time. I've been to your estate & remember thinking at the time that there could be snakes around as there is so much open area & dry grass etc. They can show up anywhere though, someone I know lives at Hillbank & found a massive brown snake in her garage! We have same orientation, front facing west and our master is at the front. We have angled the house so the garage cops most of the afternoon sun. I think we will get the front windows tinted. Good point with the blockouts letting light it at the top, pelmets are a must! I was thinking of doing them in combination with the shutters or roller blinds. It is really hard to take good photos of the rooms, think you must need a wide angle lens or something? I can't wait to see the professional shots. We do have venomous snakes here, brown snakes, red belly black snakes, death adders. The black snakes are most common but less of a worry because they are really territorial and keep the brown snakes away! They are often seen around houses because they love to eat frogs and mice, which tend to hang around. I'm a good one for wandering around the block wearing thongs, probably not setting the best example for ds 2! We will have to be careful as we are leaving our back acre natural bush, and have a dense bush block next door. To be honest I am more worried about spiders than snakes! I can't handle spiders at all! I can't handle spiders at all! Jess No worries, the shutters looks great, pity they are so expensive or we would have brought more We have recieved lots of compliements on them already Just to make you aware, I've found the roller blinds to be the worst for blocking out light (I'm not sure if anyone else has this issue) but we are finding they let in heaps of light on the sides. We have them for DD's bedroom & they are doing the job ok, it doesn't worry her, but between the fabric blockouts, shutters & double rollers they are the least effective. Oh you do have a variety of snakes I believe we have red bellied black snakes around SA but I've not heard of any locally. Just the name "Death Adder" give me shivers! Yeah, I only wear boots outside now & same with the kids, I buy them the good ones that go higher up their legs & have the thicker soles. I think once we have our landscaped area it wont be so bad but at the moment I'm just paranoid with all the dry grass & weeds, too hard to see anything! Yuk, I hate spiders too, I've killed plenty of redbacks & we have these awful big field spiders that are really jumpy, DH had one chase him as he tried to kill it! Last week & smashed one with a shoe & about 100 babies burst out & ran everywhere It was horrible!!! Re: Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 357Apr 05, 2012 2:09 pm Ewww, I am freaking out just thinking about the jumping spiders! As for the babies, that's like some horror movie scene. I pulled some mail out of the letterbox once and was walking back to the house, felt something tickle my hand, looked down and there was a GIANT huntsman creeping off the letters onto my hand! Needless to say I screamed like I was being murdered and got the attention of a few of our neighbours, so embarrassing! I swear they target the phobics! Also irrationally petrified of those big stick insects. There was a big one over the door frame at MIL's place and I refused to go out onto the deck while it was there. DH told me I was "being ridiculous" and that it hadn't moved in hours, so I walk out and whadya know... it jumps off onto me and gets tangled in my hair!! So I am running around screaming hysterically, "get it out, get it out!!" Ah, good times... You wouldn't think I grew up in the bush, would you? Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 358Apr 05, 2012 2:16 pm You poor thing ... I also hate spiders and we have loads of white tails which are not good, we surface spray the perimeter of the house on a regular basis so if they cross the line they are dead! I don't mind stick insects - they are quite harmless but if you have an irrational fear it would take a lot to convince you .... I think youe right though it seems they do target phobics!! Re: Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 359Apr 05, 2012 2:53 pm Are white tails the ones that bite you and the bite spreads and gets necrotic? That's a good idea to spray the perimeter, do you just use that Mortein Professional or something similar? I am ok with them as long as they stay away, outside where they belong! I prefer my wildlife of the mammal or amphibious variety Re: Our custom design on 2acre - Some curtain pics 360Apr 05, 2012 3:03 pm Yep they're the ones .. we just use Mortein or similar - seems to do a good job. We also spray the underneath of sofas, beds, etc. it's amazing what you find there. Now back to building/decorating .... I had my heart set on a shutter for the kitchen window but decided afterl iving in the house for a while that it would drive us both mad - we love to have blinds/curtains open where possible and I know you lose a bit of light with the shutters so we canned it .. it would have looked gorgeous but sometimes you have to be practical and it's also what suits the house/window as well as the application. The curatins and pelmets in our master make it nice and cosy and dark .. if we leave the bedroom door open we have a free night light provided by the street light outside.
