Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 21May 06, 2011 10:22 am yay....exciting! and moving along quickly. we reviewed all our colours yesterday, have narrowed it down, but still multiple combinations/options!!! i dont know why im so stuck on it!!! it is very hard with just a small sample though. what colours have you narrowed down to? are you worried about chipping? we want 2pac but dont know if we want to risk it with the kids, or even ourselves! Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 22May 06, 2011 12:01 pm Not too concerned about chipping but it will probably be in the back of my mind. From what I have heard, you can just use a touch up paint to repair any chips. I was worried about behind the island as we are going to have bar stools & know the kids will kick against the island. We are having a laminate on there as a feature. Can you remember the Dechellis display at Playford that has the dark laminate on the island? we are having that, husband really liked it & will be more hard wearing too. Actually, our bathroom tiles are based on a Dechellis display there too, can't remember which one but it has the brown tiles as a feature wall in the ensuite. As for colours, Kitchen we are after a 2pack in a coffee colour & bathroom/ensuite we want a slightly darker shade of brown. Benchtops will be a lighter stone maybe panna cotta or french nougat. Our house is going to have alot of brown tones, I'm really going for a warmer feel. Will add a splash of colour in the furnishings etc I guess. We can make changes though so I will go through it with a fine tooth comb tonight. Feeling a bit disheartened though, we saw the joinery people last week & arranged to have some 2pack samples sprayed, we were under the impression that they would be ready early this week so I rang up & asked if I could pick them up today as we had appointments with Adelaide Marble & Seaton Glass tomorrow. They said that would be fine & would call if there were any problems however today when we went there they weren't said they normally take 2wks! so now our benchtops, splashback & paint selections have to wait as my husband is back at work this Thursday & is gone for 2wks as he if FIFO. I'm know it won't hold up progress, I was more just frustrated with the joinery people as they told me they would ring if there were any issues & since I heard nothing I booked appointments etc. Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 24May 10, 2011 5:04 pm How annoying - just goes to show YOU have to do the running around - you can't rely on others. With your electrics put double instead of single power points if you think you might need them in future, we put a power point in the cupboard outside the laundry so we can plug the cordless vacuum cleaner in and a double in the garage. Remember you'll need one for your dishwasher and another for your microwave and also outside for water service, irrigation etc. Our electrical plan is on my thread on page 5 if you are interested. Good luck with the rest of your selections!! It's a great feeling when it's all done. For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 25May 10, 2011 8:24 pm Lots of double power points! we were quoted on 2 per room anyway but my husband is actually a qualified sparky so he is going to add any extra power points, lights afterward. We were going through the Clipsal quote & we are being charged $490 per IXL heat lamp!! so we will just buy them ourselves for $100 & DH can install them. They are also $150 per downlight, we are only having 4 so he will buy them for $25ea & again, install himself. The guy at Clipsal was really good though & knew of all the required power points such as fridge, microwave etc. I was spewing about having to have the hot plate override switch in the glass splash back & it would stick out like dogs b***, so we ended up using those fancy looking Saturn switches with the white glass cover plate throughout the kitchen, wish the budget had allowed for them throughout, they look cool! Im over downlight now (want something different to old house) so i want a fancy light over the dining table and in the family area, so he suggested to leave them in the ceiling too, so then we can do it after to make sure its centre of the table. i love those glass switches too, that will be on my list to change over when we have spare $, after everything is established and a few new furniture pieces. thanks for mentioning.....i am now going to check if they put a position on our plan for the oven/stove safety switch. i totally forgot about it.....its law, right??? Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 27May 11, 2011 11:46 am Yeah, we only use downlights as spotlights so we have 2 above each of the mirrors in the bathrooms. We are also planning to use 6 big ones up the front hallway. Since DH will fit extra light fittings we are just getting batten lights throughout. Saw some really nice pendant lights at Gepps Cross Home HQ so might go back for them, we're having ceiling fans/lights in family, meals & bedrooms, boring but practical. Yes, the over ride switch is a must & it has to be within 1m of the cooktop, we also have a powerpoint at each end of the splashback, spewing about needing them in the glass but nowhere else to put them Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 29May 11, 2011 1:32 pm Sorry Dreamer, my DH isn't keen on the floor plan being online I didn't realise I deleted the shed pic though, I will upload that again tonight, I have a couple of other pics to add too Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 30May 11, 2011 8:20 pm Here are our tile selections, was hoping to be able to show it with stone tops etc but that will have to wait a couple of weeks now! These are what we are having in ensuite & main bathroom. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ensuite: The wall that you see as you walk into the en-suite is going to be tiled in the brown wall tile, this includes up the dividing wall pillars & under the mirror. The off white tile will be used for the other 3 walls. Sounds dark but as the mirror is full height & you see the reflection of the white tiles it brightens it up. The floor tile is the same as the wall tile but 300x300. Powder Room/Bathroom Using the brown tile under the mirror again & in the bathroom, the wall you see as you walk in will be the brown tile. Same floor tile but we're using the honed ones in there as I'm paranoid of the kids slipping on the glossy ones. Also this is a 2pack sample we had made up for the ensuite/powder room cupboards, I now think we need a richer, darker brown. However, I really like the colour & we're thinking it would look good in the kitchen. It looks a bit dark in this pic, it's a coffee colour which is the kind of shade we wanted in the kitchen anyway. Re: Our custom design on 2 acres, incl. some selection pics! 32May 28, 2011 11:11 am Hi there, I just came across your thread (again), forgot to subscribe so will do it now. We are going to be looking for a draftsperson soon - were you happy with yours? Understand about not wanting to have your kids driving through the hills (from a post ages ago), I like Williamstown area but wouldn't move there for the same reason. My eldest son works in TTG area so he would have to drive on that awful road with a drop on one side - I'm sure you know the one I mean. I don't like driving on it either. In regard to Gawler not really being country, I agree and it has got so busy which is one of the reasons we want to move - the main road is noisy even though we are not directly on it. Our new block is so quiet, I love it However once we drive out of the estate I'm sure the roads will be quite busy. Good luck with all your selections, things are happening so quickly for you. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Our custom design on 2 acres, incl. some selection pics! 33May 28, 2011 11:15 am Broom something to think about with the override switch. We too didn't want it on our splash as it would spoil the picture that we have. So instead mine is on an adjoining wall not on the glass - could this be an option for you? And yep we used the Saturn switch too - if I had to have a switch then at least it could be pretty LOL. Some things are worth waiting for. Hey, yes we were extremely happy with our draftsman, we used a guy called Damien from DJG Designs, his office is in Mawson Lakes. He was full of advice & as a added bonus he was very quick with getting plans done. Our builder was happy with his work to so got him to do all the working drawings. Oh yes, I know the road you mean, my DH (who will most likely read this) loves that road & takes the corners way too quickly which makes me feel sick. Gawler is so busy now days, I grew up there & it has changed so much, we are just out of Gawler so where we are is about 10mins away & very "rural" between our 2 kids & barking dog it's us that has disturbed the peace Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Our custom design on 2 acres, incl. some selection pics! 35May 28, 2011 2:16 pm kyton Broom something to think about with the override switch. Thanks Kyton, I would have preferred it to the side & we asked about that but we have joinery to both sides & apparently they can't put a switch there without having to mount it on some box thing? excuse my very "technical" terminology Those Saturn switches look very nice, we used them throughout our kitchen, if only the budget would allow for throughout the house! Re: Our custom design on 2 acres in SA 37May 30, 2011 8:42 pm Hey Wildorchid, do you mean it's not required for an underbench oven? our oven is built in (tower) but the over ride switch I mean is for the cooktop. We will have to double check with our builder to see if they have been installing them although the guy at Clipsal was adamant they we still required. We had an appointment with our builder today, mainly to go over our selections but we still have to finalise our joinery, stone tops & glass splashback, we have appointments for all of those on Wednesday. Looking forward to it all being done, thankfully it's not holding the builder up.
