Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 08, 2011 11:56 pm Hi everyone, I've trawled this forum hoping to find someone with a similar issue, but to no avail.. so here goes: I'm a first time builder who's purchased a small cottage lot (about 304m2). I've set my heart on a modern simple "cottage" look and have decided on the following after weeks of umming and ahhing: - Austral Brick: Hampton (red brick) - Colorbond roof, fascia, gutters, downpipes: Windspray - 3 x steelposts on front verandah: Windspray - Garage door: Windspray - Eaves: white - Driveway: Grey vistapave (this is a shade of mid grey lighter than the Windspray) with a Charcoal vistapave border. - Front door: Solver White (a crisp clean white) - Window frames: White If you were standing at the front of the house, you would just see the master bedroom wall to the left (with a big white framed sliding window), the main door in the middle, and the garage to the right. The master bedroom is set forward, and the main door and garage set back. After being told by the builder I could remove the rendering on the two half meter wide walls to the left and right of the garage door, I decided to get rid of the render and have a fully red bricked front facade. Afterall, who's ever seen a cottage/country house with rendered walls on the front?!? HEREIN ****** THE AWFUL PROBLEM: After weeks of preparing for prestart and lovely visions of a warm cosy red brick front facade, I have recently been informed by the builder that at least part of the front facade HAS to be rendered. Not happy!!! I considered cladding instead, but these walls are only half a meter wide and cladding them would look too "piecey". The least obvious wall to render would be the half meter walls directly to the left and right of the garage door. What colour render would be best if I want to retain the modern-cottage look??? I'm thinking white render, and possibly painting a mural over the render if it looks too stark.... is this a silly idea? Anyone has any other solutions please???? I will be so eternally grateful!
