Friends in Balmain have houses half the size of ours. We have five of us, but in laws come and stay a lot, so looking at renovating and adding about 70sm to make a total of 200sm which I think is huge. We have 900sm of land so plenty of space Re: How big is your house? 42Apr 10, 2011 8:53 pm free will 130 sm so a fairly big house - interesting that the lowest choice was 150sm. As 200 sqm isn't a large house, although that would depend on your definition of large Re: How big is your house? 43Apr 10, 2011 9:18 pm I have a house of just over 200m2 (23 squares) which seems quite large to me, admittedly only 2 of us in household though. Also has a pergola area 66m2 not UMR. On block of 707m2, not sure what percentage that works out to, but leaves fairly generous garden area by modern urban standards Much smaller than many new build houses on this forum though. But many older established houses around here are only 10 or 12 squares. However, Trish and freewill, you need to take into account that in "build area" people are including garages and sometimes alfrescos UMR, not just the interior liveing area of the house - as one often does in an established house which may not have a garage or alfresco umr. As 200 sqm isn't a large house, although that would depend on your definition of large No mistake - house is 7m wide, 18.5m long. So splitting up that space, you get the equivalent of 8 rooms of 3.5m by 4.6m. We have 3 bedrooms, living/dining/kitchen taking up 3 rooms worth, bathrooms/laundry taking one room worth and one rumpus room. We could easily convert the rumpus to a bedroom to create a 4 bedroom house. If we add another 70sm, that is 10x7 which basically becomes the new open plan living/dining/kitchen with the old area converted to bedrooms. So a 5 bedroom house, two living areas, 3 bathrooms, 200sm. That seems big to me. But we do not have a garage and no external area included in the calculation. Re: How big is your house? 45Apr 11, 2011 11:41 am fekish zarby Currently living with my parents. house is 1250m2 (approx) on 10 acres. Going to be building a smaller home with my girlfriend, a 320m2 home on a 578m2 block. Going to be so much better! to much work keeping this current place clean. is it a palace? Im really not sure why my parents liked building big. they went from a 300m2 home back in 1987 which was a pretty large home at the time, to a 600m2 home, which we lived in for 10 years, then to this one. My dad did most of the labour himself for each house. as a result he has never had a home loan on his private property. myself on the other hand.... not so lucky. but different times i guess. To be honest I didn't expect so many people to participate in the poll, thus I could have been a bit more specific.... but seeing the poll results I would say that I should have been more specific in the areas 200 to 350 that most people voted. I thought that usually appartments are in the 100 m2 area, and houses start at 150 and more... Re: How big is your house? 47Apr 15, 2011 6:56 am 272sqm here on a 605sqm block. Quite small compared to others it appears! Mind you we're not having a garage, so I suppose that makes a bit of difference. We're in a tiny 4 bedroom house at the moment, so this is going to seem like a mansion compared to that Re: How big is your house? 48Apr 15, 2011 8:07 am Wehave a 265 sqm house on a 796sqm block. Retaining walls and landscaping Re: How big is your house? 49Apr 15, 2011 8:33 am Also you have to keep in mind it is not the size of the house that is important it is how the space is used for example a good design an 300sqm can have more usable space than a home of 400 sqm that is badly designed. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: How big is your house? 50Apr 15, 2011 9:37 am Well, yes, and how many people are liveing there etc - our house seems quite spacious to me for 2 people - would be not so spacious if we were a family with 4 children What is important IMO is haveing a house which suits you. Re: How big is your house? 51Apr 15, 2011 9:44 am Ours is 229sqm (25 squares) on a 400sqm block. Heaps of room for the 2 of us at the minute, and possibly in the future with young kids (long way off though!). Might be interesting when they get older Re: How big is your house? 52Apr 15, 2011 11:45 am take2 Also you have to keep in mind it is not the size of the house that is important it is how the space is used for example a good design an 300sqm can have more usable space than a home of 400 sqm that is badly designed. Cheers Lou totally agree! Friends of ours have a house the exact same size but seems much smaller, poorly designed. Re: How big is your house? 55Apr 16, 2011 11:14 pm Ours is approx 301sqm including alfresco and garage - only 227.74 of living space (single story). I was one of 4 kids who grew up in a very small 3 bedroom 120M2 house. We thrived and survived. I have seen some peoples games rooms as big as our whole house was. How times have changed. The bigger the house the bigger the mortgage the bigger the mess to clean up, the more furniture to buy, less space for outside activities. I remember seeing a show on ABC 4 Corners a while back saying the same thing, 'Modern houses have gotten way bigger as the blocks have gotten smaller'. Give me a good old fashioned 1/4 acre block with a mediocre size house any day. Re: How big is your house? 60Sep 06, 2011 10:30 am Ours will be 282sqm (double storey), including 55sqm of porch/balcony/garage. 171sqm footprint on a 656sqm block - 26% Thanks mate.
