Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 08, 2011 12:54 pm Hoping to get some opinions on solar design for the new house. Here's what I have come up with so far: 1. We have garage with skillion roof facing due north. Garage is 6x6 so roof area is a little bigger with 10 degree angle and 600mm eaves on 3 sides. This will be reserved for solar panels. BTW, the meter box is on the garage wall too so this seems ideal. 2. We have a roof facing north west. Our plans include a solar hot water heater and the builders have placed the collectors right in the middle of that roof. We are also thinking about putting in solar heating for a pool on that roof section which would probably fill the rest of the space. Originally I thought about moving the hot water panels to one side but if I understand correctly, pool heater tube installation is pretty flexible so perhaps it would be better aesthetically to leave the hot water panels in the middle and then surround them with the pool tubes? Re: Solar design 2Apr 08, 2011 2:32 pm Have you decided what goes on the roof? Its normally cheaper to put solar panels on a steel roof rather than tiles, and there is less chance of damaging the roof during installation and maintenance. Any chance of making the roof a bit steeper as 15-20 will improve efficiency. Here is a link on panel orientation. http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=391.
