white paint turned yellow builder to repaint all

we moved into our house december and recently had one of the doors on our double door replaced and pretty much all the skirts repainted due to overspray. The new paint is a brilliant white gloss whilst the surrounding archtraves and other door half has yellowed. In my opinion this shouldnt 'age' in 3 months and our house looks rediculous and i want all the white areas to be repainted so it all blends in. Builder and paint reps saying its natural oxidation - what BS! This is my brand new house, its not my fault they only rectified thier painting and faulty carpentry 3 months later, it needs to be done all at the same time so it ages at the same time. Everyone including directors have agreed its like chalk and cheese.

Is the yellowed section generally hidden from daylight or fresh air?

Newer paints use a type of oil that yellows if not exposed to light & air. Especially if you have recessed sliding doors, keeping the doors closed (and thus exposed to air and light) will ensure they stay white. In fact paint that has yellowed can be turned white again with fresh air and natural light.

Strange but true. It's the 'green friendly' oils they use in paint these days that yellows.

We have been told that if we want to use white enamel paint, we do so at our own risk, because of yellowing. Apparently it happens a lot.

Thanks for the tips. If we had been warned about white paint yellowing then we probably would have picked a different colour. We werent and we were assured they were using Haymes top quality paints. The fact that they have done touch ups 3 months later from a different can of paint and it is so obviousley different. The main difference is our double doors on our bedroom so they get equal amount of light. We painted the old door with the left over paint we had and surprise surprise its the same colour! also did a colour sample on cardboard and its not nearly as brilliant white as the new paintworks!

We have the same. I had no idea it turned yellow, but 4 months in and it's extremely noticeable in some places. My pantry door that gets sunlight all day is still quite white, but the ones in the hallway behind it just look dirty. If I had of known, I would've asked for the water based one.

kavother, have you asked them what paint type they used? If they used OIL based paint (and not acrylic (water)), then it's all that there is to it. Oil based paint in pure white will always yellow/darken, and very quickly so.
