Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 24, 2011 3:16 pm We are building with Switch homes - eight80, as per Harrisdale display. Loved the high spec finishes as standard inclusions, and the out the back living which will suit our block (Wembley). We signed up end of October 2010, and today had our first movements on the site. We are demolishing, so they came in to pull down asbestos etc. I feel a little sad to see the old house go, babies being born there etc... but will be happy to see what goes up in her place. I want to blog the process a bit, have read a few threads from others about building with Switch which haven't inspired me with too much confidence, but we shall see.... Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 2Mar 24, 2011 3:33 pm Yay! Another switch home! Am hoping the crappy stories I hear here are the end of a long, bad settling in period for switch We need plans, pics, colours!! my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 3Mar 24, 2011 10:10 pm Hi! i have been following your thread for a few days, and I would love to know where you are at with your home now? Hoping you are done and dusted..... I look forward to sharing the plans pics and colours - how do you set up those clever little time lines? I find them very interesting..... oh, hang about, I just re read your thread - you've not started yet? yikes.... i shouldn't feel so bad only being about 8 weeks behind, we were told demolition would be end of Jan '11. I've kissed goodbye our chances of 'being in for Christmas' - what a cliche! Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 4Mar 25, 2011 5:49 am Yep, not started yet, but hopefully soon, else I may go insane! They are still telling me a build time of 6 months (despite me telling them I'm reading very different around here) so I'm REALLY expecting to be in by xmas, we better be, all our xmas stuff is boxed and in storage already! my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 5Mar 25, 2011 11:48 pm Well, maybe our houses will get built at similar times, will be a very interesting next 6 months. We have had more asbestos removed today - I didn't know most of the roof cladding and eaves were asbestos - and we lived in it with the children very young for 5 years! We have 3 children, ages 11, 8 and nearly 3. Looking forward to my little boy and I watching endless hours of diggers, loaders, cement mixers and trucks etc etc.... he is a big fan of construction! I hope we are all in by Christmas...shall we try and stay positive as long as possible?? D day next Tueday (Demolition day that is...) Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 6Mar 26, 2011 10:44 am I'm staying positive, given I've had to wait so long on titles I believe the universe wouldn't then stuff me about and make me wait for the house! Bet the 3yo loved the trucks! Pics, we need pics! I've not been through that display, but I think someone else did a modified version of that... my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 7Mar 27, 2011 10:58 am welcome to the switch group hope they've sorted out all the teething issues for you Follow Feggle viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34992 Follow lilfeggle viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37149 Asbestosis Sux! Could you let me know if you were hit by an exorbitant bill for asbestos removal? Our demolisher started work yesterday and came back today asking for another $8k (on top of $13k) because they found asbestos in the roof. Previously they only found asbestos in the eaves. We are away abroad now and are wondering how to verify and assess this huge additional cost which came as such a shock. Will appreciate any info you can share ... By the way, apparently living under asbestos for several years would probably not have caused you any harm. It's when you disturb it or remove it and the fibres get released into the air that's when it becomes harmful. (I actually remember touching and holding an asbestos board when I was a kid, when it wasn't known that it has a harmful substance, I guess). Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 9Apr 05, 2011 8:53 pm Yes asbestos is very deadly - my father passed last due June from Asbestos related diseases. Asbestos is ok if not disturbed, if these guys are removing it, i'm sure they are wetting it down also to ensure no loose fibres get away. It is very expensive to dispose of too, hense the extreme costs. Follow Feggle viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34992 Follow lilfeggle viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37149 Asbestosis Sux! How was he exposed to asbestos? Now the demolisher says they have removed the roof tiles. I really hope they have not left the asbestos exposed ... Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 11Apr 06, 2011 9:29 am Yeah, he worked with it. He had a massive land mark case in Supreme Courts in Melbourne and with NSW Dust Diseases Board. He was also the Chairman of the QLD Asbestos Society, He said a new wave of victims are now as young as 25 with asbestosis, during the mid 's renovations. Asbestos Awareness saves lives! I did wonder why it cost so much, but i realise now there was more asbestos than I had realised! So we did know costs up front...but will let you know if anything changes, we aren't finished yet. The young chaps doing the removals seemed well kitted out in protective gear, it looked like a well managed safe operation. Very sorry to hear about your Dad. I can imagine that there will be a new generation of tradies and owners who need to be much more aware of the dangers of demo and reno of these old asbestos laden houses and buildings. As far as progress on our site, i will post some pics later. The old lady is slowly being picked to pieces for salvage - lots of lovely Jarrah floorboards, and timber window frames etc.... the awesome Jarrah roof beams, she was solid that's for sure. I have taken some of the shorter lengths of jarrah for recylcing in our new home. I want to turn them into a feature something....just don't know what yet. I like the idea of having something of the old in with the very new, a nice reminder. Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 13May 26, 2011 3:56 pm It has been about 6 weeks since I last posted and i am so happy to tell you that we have the start of a new house. House has been demolished, cleared block, retaining, new fencing 1/2 done, slab poured and feature rammed earth walls are up! The rammed earth looks gorgeous - if I had my way I would have the whole house rammed earth. I was intrigued to see these feature walls go up first - looks a but like a funky art installation. The guy said it's because they need a lot of room and basically use the pad as a giant mixing pallete. Bricks have been delivered and expect some walls to go up soon. We had a number of significant problems with the block retaining - can you believe the surveyor was out by 700mm - 70cm!! Short 70cm on levels, which is a huge amount of extra soil needed - I guess the silver lining was that we didn't have to pay for it. The wrong twinside was installed, and a truck knocked out of gear and took out our neighbours back fence. All in a couple of days and i was begining to have a serious sense of humour failure. Also very frustrated with Switch not communicating with us. BUT - since slab poured all has gone very smoothly. Will try and post some plans and photos soon.... Has anyone looked into and used Largo Quickstep laminate flooring?

Would love to see your plans I've looked at the largo range- its lovely, but we're still not at the making floor decision stage yet my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Building with Switch Homes - so it starts.... 15Jun 08, 2011 4:43 pm We are building with Switch Homes. We chose them for the excellent product they offer. The pre-sales was great, but the commenced pegging in mid December, and we went to lock-up 2 weeks ago. They have been extremely slow, and they have damaged a lot of the work carried out to date, which will now have to be repaired. They also made a vital error on the structure, and the communication from them has been abysmal to date. We were one of the first properties to commence build on our road, and now we are behind most of the others. We have had so many issues arise post signing of the contract, that it has cost us a lot of money - many of these things could have been avoided if they had been more forthright at the beginning. After a great start to the process, we are bitterly disappointed Any electricians here please help. 1) Will the Fan need separate switch to ON/OFF/Speed eventhough it comes with Remote 2) how about… 0 1224 Ask for references and speak to them.
