Got to the house after work with drinks in hand and our 1st meal which consisted of hot dogs and hot chips elegantly eaten on the breakfast bar with plastic cutlery. Went to turn on a light and it was a busted light switch (ok need to get electrician back in). Then in all my excitement running around opening every door, cupboard, turning on lights, turning off lights, turning on taps and flushing toilets I decided it was time to open the garage door. This is where it went wrong......... pushed the button and CRUNCH- I forgot to release the lock on the side of the rollar door and bent the whole top panel of the rollar door as it tried to pull it up. Quickly stopped the door and burst into tears. Have officially owned my house for 4 hours and ive broken it already . DP comes running in sees the door lectures me as if Im 5 years old and a naughty child saying 'you should have just waited for me', 'this is going to cost us to get fixed' and finally 'you need to call your dad NOW'. Well this set me off even more and ran to a corner and curled up in a little ball (yes I actually did I was so embarrassed). So get home to parents house, I refuse to come in side, DP tells dad what happens, dad cracks up laughing and comes to find me, sees me crying and laughs even harder, which makes me more upset- he's getting soft in his old age. Well silver lining is yes it can be fixed, i didnt do major damage. Dads going in tomorrow to take door off and push the tin back out so should all be fine. So my VERY exciting day of an 18month saga finished with a bang. Good news though, tiler should be starting next week Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 243Aug 11, 2011 8:17 pm Oh dear , poor you Thank goodness its easily fixed . Congratulations on getting the keys Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 244Aug 11, 2011 8:58 pm sorry, I know it would have been devastating at the time... but you told the story so well! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 245Aug 11, 2011 9:00 pm By the way - congratulations on getting keys (my hubby would've said the same to me) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 246Aug 11, 2011 9:02 pm thanks all... im laughing about it all now but last night was a different story. dreamcometrue I was exaggerating anything in the story either, its exactly how it happened. I bet my family would have loved to have it on video Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 247Aug 12, 2011 8:55 am Oh you poor thing - thanks for the advice - I won't touch anything when we move in - I'll leave it to DH to break things You would have been over excited so the least little thing would have set you off - not very sympathetic were they? Glad all is well! For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 248Aug 12, 2011 9:21 am I was literally in tears reading your story. You guys sound exactly like my wife and I. Little example. I had just finished putting together a gas lift office chair, I walk out the room and my wife is there in the chair pulling the leaver leaning right back and then forth, going "FORWARD - BACKWARD - FORWARD - BACKWARD" and then all of a sudden we hear a CRUNCCHHHHH!!!!!! She just broke the chair she jumped up, looked at me, looked at the chair, looked at me, and then ran into the bedroom and sat on the floor next to the bed crying because she was embarrassed. The chair had been finished for 5 seconds and she broke it lol. Your not alone in your reaction. It would have been the excitement and embarrassment all mixed into one emotional breakdown. Just think to your self. This could have just as easily happened in 2 years time, when you are you partner went away for a holiday and locked the roller doors. Stuff happens. Anyways, congrats on the keys!!!! Hopefully we'll be joining you in the estate real soon Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 249Aug 12, 2011 9:39 am Quote: Just think to your self. It could have easily been DP that went to open the garage door first too... may have done exactly the same thing. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 250Aug 12, 2011 9:42 am Quote: my wife is there in the chair pulling the leaver leaning right back and then forth, going "FORWARD - BACKWARD - FORWARD - BACKWARD" Well, one has to make sure it's working... https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 251Aug 12, 2011 10:25 am Don't get me wrong. I've broken my list of things. One time I was installing a Hills wall clothes line, and the counter sunk bolt broke, and I was swearing and cursing and then it got dark. I was so stubborn I was out there in the dark with a torch in my mouth obsessed about getting it done lol. Wife was smart, sitting inside with the heater on in her robe having a nice coffee Either way, it doesnt take long to look back at yourself and laugh Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-We Got Keys 252Aug 13, 2011 11:04 am So embarrassing! After the events of Wednesday night and the pure embarrassment I have felt since, DP thought it would be so funny to tell the WHOLE panel at his Football club on Thursday night of my misfortune. Alas I was unaware he had told people until last night at his footy match the A Grade coach came and asked me how the rollar door was doing, so did the club president and ALL the board members. Thankfully I am now laughing about it but still majorly upset with myself about it. Anyway doors being removed today to be fixed. If worse comes to worse and I need to replace the top panel shouldnt be too much out of pocket. Gliderol also said yesterday that it should not have been locked and the power connected anyway so it actually wasnt my fault (YAY) but it still happened. Dog decided to christen the house yesterday by laying her business in the entry hall. Apparently its a good omen... we'll see. Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-roller door like new 254Aug 14, 2011 11:55 am YAY ITS FIXED! only took about half hour and looks like new again. So i have learnt from this that make sure you unplug your roller door if you are going to bolt lock it from now on. You know what I dont think i will ever bolt lock it unless going away for over a week! I feel much better now!! Thanks Dad Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-roller door like new 255Aug 14, 2011 1:58 pm Congratulations on handover I'm glad you got your door fixed. I'm sure I would've done the same thing to mine as I wouldn't know. Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-roller door like new 256Aug 18, 2011 10:04 am 1 week after handover not much has happened except my incident with the roller door. Tonight I am meeting with the tiler on site to discuss floor tiles which will be started on Monday and which were delivered on the tuesday just gone. Kitchen is my next stress as I have to decide whether to shave 2ft off the breakfast bar (ie take out a cupboard) to be able to fit a nice granite bench top on it or leave the length and forgo to granite need to decide this morning which is even harder. I would love granite but I am unsure if it will look unbalanced? HELP carpets are being ordered today (i thought they were but i thought wrong). this weekend we will be doing some cleaning and digging as cant connect stormwater just yet until we level out the land but need to wait for the soil to dry out a little to do it properly. Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-roller door like new 257Aug 22, 2011 4:57 pm I went and spent the day at our house on Saturday with the nice weather we decided to do a little work and clean some stuff up and drop some things around. It was so nice just watching what is happening in the street. We are normally focused on our house you forget to just sit back and watch. There are so many kids which is nice (except in about 15 years when the street is full of P platers). I also could not believe the amount of people driving through and stopping to look at houses still being built. Cant imagine what it will be like when the display homes open. I cant wait to move in!!! Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-handover photos 258Aug 25, 2011 7:31 pm I Know i've been slack with photo's lately but I do have heaps and i will share a few from just after handover and promise tomorrow i will put more up. Floor tiling has now started and they are going quite quickly which I am impressed by. They are looking fabulous as well and makes the house look much bigger. The kitchen has also been adjusted and looks 10 times better, will post those pics tomorrow. Sounds like it's coming along nicely now that the tiler is there. Look forward to seeing some more pics. Re: Building our dream home in Adelaide-Nearly In 260Sep 07, 2011 11:18 am Havent updated for a while so thought I would share a quick update. Tiles are finished and look amazing, front porch was also tiled so goodbye bare concrete. Carpets should be going in next weekend Was going to get bobcat in this Sunday to organise the back yard and retaining wall cuts etc and preparation for concrete to be layed around the house but due to the forecast that may not happen which will push back concrete/driveway being layed and pushed back stormwater connection which we were hoping next weekend as well. Meeting with glass ppl tonight to discuss splashback. Still crossing fingers to be in in 2 weeks but so I will be no matter what, driveway or no driveway I want to be in my house. All appliances are being installed next Tuesday so will need to spend the day waiting for these ppl (8-5) in an empty house with nothing to do so thinking of starting to move things over which are not neccessary and start unpacking them.
