Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 17, 2011 1:26 am hi all - we are building a new house in WA. Builder has given a quote of $6600.00 for installing essa stone 20 or 30 mm thick. I got quote from outside for $4500 approx. My builder does allow to get it done from outside during construction, but any damages will not be covered under their insurace. Now my question is: Is it too risky to get it from outside in case something is damaged or is it that normally outside kitchen stone installer are careful. what do you all recommend. I will be saving more than 2k if getting from outside but don't want to take any risks of any damages. kitchen stone from builder or privately during construction 2Feb 17, 2011 7:34 am It is more likely that someone from the build could damage the stone then the other way around. Ie painters / electricians / tilers etc. The stonemasons are normally pretty careful. We left our stone until the very last thing but that was because we had sacked the builder and had taken over control of the build. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: kitchen stone from builder or privately during construct 4Feb 18, 2011 2:31 pm I thought about it, decided not to do it. too much hassle to save couple of 1000s....for me anyway........ you have to think that you'll have to cut out for sink and cooktop etc as well what if it's not cut properly? who will you blame? at the time of installation of stone top, they might not have cooktop and sink they might have to measurements, but it's never perfect i won't risk it... I will let u all home one forum users make this decision for me. BTW - what is going with your build saemiseon. Mine is taking so long. had prestart in October early and got costing last week only and it is still not complete costing Re: kitchen stone from builder or privately during construct 7Feb 18, 2011 6:06 pm I went through the same process. Initially I didn't realise the cabinet maker got the stonemason to do the benchtops. Anyway, we were going to do the benchtops ourselves through the builder recommended stonemason, and by removing it from the contract, not attract any builders margin. However the cabinetmaker uses a different stonemason (not the builder's preferred stonemason) so I got a separate quote from them. The cabinetmaker explained to me it is best to have him take responsibility for the stone (or at least someone apart from you) ... because otherwise, if the cabinets and the stone don't line up, then the cabinetmaker will blame the stonemason etc, but if the cabinetmaker takes overall responsibility for it, he will or should make sure the stonework is good before paying the stonemason. Re: kitchen stone from builder or privately during construct 8Feb 18, 2011 10:10 pm thanks danrts. so much to consider that benchtops don't get damaged due to cabinets, plumbing for sink, gas and tiling, painter etc. My builder said that benchtops can be installed by our supplier during construction adn when advised by supervisor. Re: kitchen stone from builder or privately during construct 9Feb 18, 2011 11:23 pm we had our benchtops installed during constructions through a private mason. both parties were very amenable to it, the builder allowed access, made a template for the mason etc, the mason came and did his stuff, all good. the only hiccup was on the day before handover when the stove was being installed they realised the hole in the stone wasn't big enough. the mason had cut the hole as per the template, but there was a bit underneath that wasn't accounted for in the template, if that makes sense. so technically it was the builder's fault, but the stone mason came out and fixed it free of charge. we just couldn't use the stove for a couple of days till they could come, and the dust they generated when they fixed it was a bvgger to deal with... but it was worth it for the money we saved "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Our bank requires us to provide one but we are missing 4 building certificates from our first… 3 57041 1 51407 How are you doing Ben?
