Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 10, 2011 2:50 pm We really need to lock something in ASAP for our block. We've almost chosen a builder (a large-scale builder). There's a few issues I have with some of the appliances the builder that we are keenest on uses. They told me that I could select a different model of the same brand but not change brands because they offer a 20 week guarenteed build time and they need to stick to the same suppliers. I understand that, but it doesn't change that I'm not that happy with what's on offer in the kitchen. Can anyone offer tips for getting around this. The issue is I'm not a fan of the wide 900mm oven/cookers. I'd rather a seperate oven and grill, preferably in an oven tower (though this seems to cost over $1000 just for the tower, so maybe not?) Also a dishwasher is supplied - they key feature is how the childlock works, even more important than does the dw match the appliances to me. So I wonder can a house be built without an oven and we source one ourselves after hand-over? The oven and DW supplied are part of a "promotion" and we are happy with the other parts of the promo. But I really object to paying for something now and replacing it with our preferred item after hand-over. It's not just about the cost but also the wastefullness of the exercise (and my husband would have a fit at the suggestion) Any thoughts? Negotiating with builders - appliance changes 2Feb 10, 2011 2:54 pm You can't force the builder - you can only put your request in writing asking for a change to the specific make and model that you want. At the end if the day you need to weigh up whether it is the deal breaker for you to walk away if they don't say yes. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Negotiating with builders - appliance changes 3Feb 10, 2011 2:58 pm You could also get their standard appliances delivered - not get them commissioned and sell it on later (like on ebay/trading post or something) and then purchase your own appliances if the builder refuses to budge. So the items are still brand new? It is a pain because of the hassle - I do agree! We deleted everything from the kitchen section and will supply our own after handover. The only thing they will not let me delete is the sink & tap due to occupancy certificate issue but they're happy to let me choose one from their supplier list, paid top $$ for it though. Those standard included are absolutely rubbish.
